NYT Connections Sports Edition puzzle #477 is for Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Start with the hints below if you want to solve it yourself; the category names and all 16 answers follow the spoiler warning.

How Connections Sports Edition works

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four, with each group sharing a theme. The New York Times Help Center describes the goal this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The Sports Edition, brought to solvers by The Athletic, follows the same rules. Its color-coded categories progress from Yellow, the easiest, to Purple, the trickiest. NYT Help Center: Connections.

Hints for January 13, 2026

Try these category clues before looking at the answers:

  • Yellow: Empire State sports.
  • Green: Fighting with swords.
  • Blue: Places to play hoops.
  • Purple: William, but for short.

Tips to solve Connections #477

  • Use the specific clue, not just a broad association. The Yellow group is teams that play in New York State, while Purple is the separate word “Bills” as a surname clue.
  • Look for the shared setting. Hinkle, Palestra, Pauley, and The Pit are grouped as college basketball venues.
  • Keep the fencing vocabulary together. En garde, épée, foil, and piste point to fencing rather than general combat.
