Use ProtonDB to find dated, player-submitted clues about a Steam Deck game—not as a guarantee or official compatibility verdict. Open the exact game page, filter reports to Steam Deck, compare several recent reports describing your symptom, then try one reversible change at a time. Start with Steam’s basic update-and-restart steps before changing Proton or graphics settings.
What ProtonDB can—and cannot—tell you
ProtonDB collects reports from gamers testing games with Proton on Linux and aggregates community ratings. It describes itself as a community project with no affiliation with Valve. A ProtonDB rating is therefore not the same thing as Steam’s Steam Deck compatibility category, and it does not certify that a game will work for every player.
A game page can show its community rating, Steam Deck certification status, report count, device filter, dated reports and structured observations. Individual entries may mention Proton version, battery, launchers, graphics, input, performance, readability or a fix. These details are more useful for troubleshooting than a rating alone.
Steam’s compatibility categories answer a separate question:
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Steam category | What it means |
|---|---|
| Verified | Steam says the game works well by default on Steam Deck. |
| Playable | The game may require manual configuration. |
| Unsupported | Steam does not currently consider it playable on Deck. |
| Unknown | The game has not been tested for compatibility. |
For games marked Playable or Unsupported, Steam directs players to the game’s Steam Store page and its Steam Deck Compatibility section to see which Verified requirements are not met. Steam says its Deck Verified ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models. These labels do not replace individual ProtonDB reports; use each source for what it establishes.
Find reports that match your game and device
- Open the exact game page. Search by the game’s title or Steam app ID so you do not mistake a similarly named game for the one you own.
- Filter for Steam Deck. Select the Deck device filter rather than assuming reports from other Linux PCs apply directly. For example, the Unravel Steam Deck page shows date-stamped Deck reports and structured observations; the My Time at Sandrock Steam Deck page illustrates entries that include playtime, symptoms and settings.
- Read several relevant entries, starting with newer ones. Check each report’s date, stated playtime when available, whether the player actually launched and played, and what happened. A count or short verdict without matching details is weak evidence for your particular problem.
- Record the symptom and configuration separately. Note whether the report describes a failure to launch, a crash, visual or audio trouble, control or launcher issues, or low performance. Also capture its Proton selection, launch options and graphics settings. A proposed fix is only useful if you can identify what changed and what result followed.
Recency, Deck relevance, symptom match and configuration are practical ways to compare reports, not a validated reliability formula. The consulted ProtonDB pages show dates and user details, but do not establish a quantified method for weighting reports. Treat a positive report from an older build as a clue, not proof about the current game; likewise, one player’s failure does not establish that all Deck users will encounter it.

Use reports to guide a controlled troubleshooting test
1. Establish a clean baseline
Before applying community tweaks, install available Steam Deck system updates and restart the device, as Steam Support recommends. Retest the same part of the game and note the result. This gives you a baseline and avoids attributing an improvement to a Proton change when an update or restart may have addressed the issue.
2. Test a Proton suggestion on its own
If multiple recent, Deck-specific reports with the same symptom point to a Proton version, try it as a separate test. On the Deck, open Library > select the game > Menu > Properties > Compatibility, then enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and choose the suggested tool. Steam Support’s guide suggests trying the latest Proton; it also notes that Steam may download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Write down the original compatibility choice before changing it. Retest the same scene or activity that failed. If the change does not help, restore the original setting before trying another suggestion. Do not assume one Proton version is universally best: the reports need to match your game build, Deck, symptom and settings.
3. Reduce graphics load for performance problems
If the game launches but runs poorly, Steam Support suggests lowering the graphics preset or adjusting individual settings to reduce system load. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same in-game section so you can tell whether it made a difference. A graphics adjustment is a targeted performance test, not a general remedy for launch failures or missing content.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
4. Verify installed files for missing content or crashes
When files appear to be missing or the game crashes, Steam documents file verification at Library > select the game > Menu > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Verification is relevant to those symptoms, not a universal compatibility fix. Steam warns that some files may fail verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. See the Steam file-verification instructions for the official procedure and limitation.

Compare like with like: launch reports against launch reports, performance reports against performance reports, and input reports against input reports. Give more weight as a practical clue to recent Deck reports that describe the same symptom and explain the Proton version or settings. A report that merely says “works” may not tell you whether the player tested the part of the game that is failing for you.

An older successful report may describe a different game or software build; a failure report may reflect a setup unlike yours. Report counts and user experiences vary, and no single entry proves a general outcome.
Be especially cautious with advice involving unusual launch options, custom compatibility builds or deleting data. Do not apply such a change without understanding its effect and having a way to undo it; seek corroboration from reports that describe the same issue. If the problem remains after Steam’s basic steps and a controlled test, use Steam Support or the game developer’s support channel. Steam’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide documents its update, restart, compatibility and graphics guidance.
