If a Verified game runs poorly, start with reversible system checks, then change one game setting at a time and retest the same scene.
First, work out what changed and how widely it happens
Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects one game or several, whether performance is consistently low or suddenly dips, and whether it began after a game, SteamOS, Proton, or settings update. These clues help separate a title-specific issue from a broader system problem; they do not identify the cause by themselves.
- One game only: focus first on that game’s settings, compatibility, and developer support.
- Several games or the Steam interface: prioritize system updates, a restart, and checking for background software.
- Crashes or missing content: file verification may be relevant in addition to performance tuning.
- Visual glitches or control problems: record those separately; they may need a different fix than low frame rate.
Valve describes Verified games as working great on Deck by default, but compatibility ratings are a snapshot and can change as games and Proton change. The badge is a useful starting point, not a promise about every later update or every in-game situation. Valve’s Verified announcement explains that ratings can change over time.
Apply the low-risk system checks first
- Install SteamOS updates: open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available update.
- Restart the Deck: choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Temporarily exit third-party Desktop Mode applications or other background software, then retest the game. Re-enable them afterward if they were not contributing to the problem.
These are Valve’s first-line software checks for Deck trouble. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell whether a step made a difference. Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide covers updates, restarting, background software, and performance checks.

Reduce graphics load and retest the same scene
Lower the game’s graphics preset, or reduce demanding options individually. Keep a note of the original values so you can restore them. After each change, revisit the same scene or repeat the same action; comparing different areas of a game can make it harder to judge whether a setting helped.
- Make one adjustment at a time rather than changing several settings together.
- Look for steadier frame pacing, not just a momentary peak in the frame counter.
- Do not expect a particular frame-rate increase: Valve recommends lowering graphics settings but does not promise a fixed gain.
Performance problems can have multiple causes, so a graphics adjustment is a test rather than a guaranteed fix. Valve’s general performance troubleshooting guidance discusses that broader context, though it is not a Steam Deck-specific diagnosis.

Test Proton as a controlled comparison
If the game is having trouble, try the latest Proton version as a diagnostic test. In Steam, open the game’s Library entry, choose Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select the latest Proton version available. Test the same scene, then restore the previous selection if performance or compatibility gets worse.
Proton changes are not guaranteed to improve every game. Avoid assuming that Proton Experimental or an older release is the right choice for an unnamed title; use a developer’s title-specific compatibility note only if it applies to your exact game and build. Steam may download a Windows version of the game if only its Linux build was installed, so allow for additional download and storage use when testing. Verify game files if there are crashes or missing content
File verification is most relevant when a game crashes or content is missing; it checks installation integrity and is not a universal low-FPS fix.
- Open the game’s Steam Library entry and choose Properties > Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
Steam notes that some files can fail verification normally because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. Steam Support’s file-verification guide explains the check.

Match refresh-rate expectations to your Deck model
Valve lists a maximum display refresh rate of 60 Hz for the Steam Deck LCD and 90 Hz for the Steam Deck OLED. A game refresh-rate setting above your model’s display limit cannot improve performance and may use more battery. Avoid treating one frame-rate target as right for every game; look for stable frame pacing that suits the game and the refresh rate you choose. Escalate with details that help identify the cause
If performance or stability trouble persists after updates and a restart, Valve suggests checking Deck discussions and contacting Steam Support. For a problem isolated to one game, contact its developer as well. Include the details needed to reproduce and distinguish the issue:

- Game name and version, plus your Deck model.
- SteamOS and Proton versions, if known.
- The scene or steps that reproduce the problem, and whether it is consistently slow or drops suddenly.
- Current graphics, refresh-rate, and frame-limit settings.
- Whether other games are affected and what changed just before the issue began.
Valve’s software troubleshooting guide links to support routes. System recovery or re-imaging is intended for serious system problems, not routine tuning for one poorly performing game; Valve warns that some recovery options erase local data. Consult SteamOS recovery guidance and back up important local data before using an option that may erase it.
