Hindenburg Research accused Roblox of overstating user numbers and engagement, but the available disclosures do not establish that Roblox intentionally misled investors—or verify Hindenburg’s estimates. The dispute turns partly on what “users” means: Roblox’s daily active users (DAUs) count active accounts, not necessarily distinct people. Hindenburg disclosed that it held a short position in Roblox shares, while Roblox rejected the firm’s financial claims as misleading.
What did Hindenburg accuse Roblox of?
In a report published on October 8, 2024, short seller Hindenburg Research alleged that Roblox overstated its audience and engagement. It estimated that DAUs were overstated by 25%–42% or more, arguing that account-based counts can include multiple accounts used by one person. It also alleged that engagement hours were overstated by more than 100%, citing a third-party consultant’s monitoring of games and servers and its analysis of unusually long sessions. These are Hindenburg’s estimates, not independently verified measurements in the sources available here. Read Hindenburg’s report.
Hindenburg also argued that describing DAUs as “people” could lead readers to understand the metric as a count of unique individuals. The distinction between accounts and individuals is expressly recognized in Roblox’s own disclosures. The disagreement over the scale of any overstatement, however, is not resolved simply by recognizing that distinction.
How does Roblox count daily active users?
Roblox defines a DAU as a unique registered account that was active on the platform during a given calendar day. Because one person can use more than one account, DAUs are not a count of unique people. Roblox has stated: “Because DAUs measure account activity and an individual user may actively use our platform within a particular day on multiple accounts for which that individual registered, our DAUs are not a measure of unique individuals accessing Roblox.”

Roblox’s October 2024 response also explained that an account active across a 24-hour span crossing two calendar days is counted only on the first day. The company said this approach better reflects global engagement than a strict calendar-day cutoff. Its filings describe the reported period’s DAU figure as an average of daily active accounts. Roblox further acknowledges that undetected fraud or unauthorized access may sometimes cause DAUs to be overstated. That disclosure identifies a possible source of error; it does not quantify the error. Read Roblox’s response.
What is disputed about Roblox’s engagement hours?
Roblox’s hours-engaged metric is an estimate assembled from session lengths, which the company derives from internal discrete activity events. The measure can include time in experiences, Roblox Studio, chat, avatar personalization and the Creator Store. Roblox also says system and estimation limits can result in some non-active time being included, and that activity tracking differs across devices and platforms.

Hindenburg said its analysis found a small share of sampled accounts with very long sessions contributing a disproportionate share of observed hours. Its reported monitoring covered games and servers; the materials cited here do not establish that it independently audited Roblox’s platform-wide calculation. The two accounts therefore concern different kinds and scopes of evidence: Roblox describes an internal metric aggregated across the platform, while Hindenburg reports sampling and analysis it used to challenge that metric. Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its operating metrics.
What did Roblox say in response?
Roblox rejected Hindenburg’s financial claims as misleading and pointed to the company’s growth, cash flow and published metric definitions. Its response said the company had disclosed how DAUs, hours and bookings are calculated. It also reproduced the company’s caveat that DAUs are not a measure of unique individuals, and said Roblox strives to detect and minimize fraud and unauthorized access.

The 2025 Form 10-K adds important context to the company’s methodology: operating metrics rely on internal analytics and estimates that have not been validated by an independent third party. Roblox cautions that measurement is inherently challenging, methods may evolve, and reported periods may not be directly comparable after methodology changes. These qualifications apply to interpreting the company’s metrics; they do not, by themselves, prove Hindenburg’s estimates or that Roblox intended to mislead anyone.
What do the reported figures show—and not show?
| Figure | Who reported it and when | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 25%–42% or more estimated DAU overstatement | Hindenburg Research, October 2024 | Hindenburg’s estimate, not an independently verified finding. |
| More than 100% estimated engagement-hours overstatement | Hindenburg Research, October 2024 | Hindenburg’s allegation, not an independently verified result. |
| 123 million average DAUs in Q2 2026 | Roblox Corporation, Q2 2026 | The company-reported account-based metric, not a count of unique individuals. |
| Approximately 1.6 million average daily unique paying users in Q2 2026 | Roblox Corporation, Q2 2026 | A separate company-reported paying-user figure. |
The figures are not like-for-like measures: Hindenburg’s percentages are estimates about possible overstatement, while Roblox’s Q2 2026 numbers are company-reported metrics for a later period. Neither set settles the accuracy of the other. Roblox’s Q2 2026 results.

Did Roblox lie to investors?
The sources cited here establish that Hindenburg made allegations and disclosed a short position, and that Roblox disputed the claims while describing its metric definitions and limitations. They do not independently verify Hindenburg’s percentage estimates, establish a company-wide measurement of the alleged discrepancies, or demonstrate intentional deception. The most concrete definitional point is narrower: Roblox DAUs count active registered accounts, not necessarily distinct people. Its engagement-hours measure is estimated and may include some non-active time under its methodology.
