Switch 2 Showed Custom Graphics in a Limited Exploit Demo on Launch Day

A launch-day Switch 2 demo displayed a small animated checkerboard using a reported userland exploit, but it did not show a full jailbreak or practical homebrew solution.

A June 5, 2025 demonstration showed a small animated checkerboard graphic on a Nintendo Switch 2 through a reported userland exploit. Coverage appeared the next day, June 6. This was a narrow proof of concept—not evidence that the console had been fully jailbroken or that owners could run homebrew.

What the Switch 2 demonstration showed

Researcher and developer David Buchanan, known online as retr0id, demonstrated custom graphics in the console’s framebuffer, the area of memory used to compose the image shown on screen. Notebookcheck’s June 6, 2025 report described an animated checkerboard in the display’s top-left corner; Tom’s Hardware also reported that the demo produced custom checkerboard graphics.

The timing explains the “one day after launch” framing: Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, and Buchanan’s demonstration was reported as having been shared that same day. The reports themselves were published on June 6.

Why this was not a full Switch 2 jailbreak

Tom’s Hardware characterized the technique as a userland Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) exploit. In broad terms, ROP redirects a program’s execution by manipulating return addresses so it can use code already present in memory. The report said the demonstration ran at user level and did not compromise the Switch 2 kernel or provide root access.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

That distinction matters: drawing a graphic from a restricted software context demonstrates a limited capability, not control over the whole console. The reporting does not establish custom firmware, a homebrew launcher, a released tool for consumers, piracy, or a general way for Switch 2 owners to modify their systems.

What the demo’s limits mean

Notebookcheck reported that the graphic occupied only a small part of the screen and that Buchanan cautioned full-screen rendering would likely harm frame rate. That is a reported limitation of this demonstration, not a measured performance benchmark for the console or a finding about what other software might be able to do.

Tom’s Hardware attributed the comment “this has no practical purpose” to Buchanan. Because that wording is reported secondhand rather than independently verified from his original post, it is best understood as the outlet’s attribution.

Does the exploit still work on current Switch 2 software?

That is not established by the available reporting. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 system update history lists version 22.5.0, released June 15, 2026, as its latest entry. Its notes mention accessibility-language additions and general stability improvements, but do not identify this particular exploit. The update log therefore does not confirm whether the issue was fixed, and the 2025 demonstration should not be treated as proof that it works on current firmware.
