When the Wardenfly can capture Hornet
The capture encounter is available after you defeat the Bell Beast and obtain Cling Grip, but only before you acquire Faydown Cloak. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s The Slab page gives this progression window. This is an optional event, separate from Hornet’s capture in the opening story.
Where to find the cage-carrying Wardenfly
Deep Docks
Start in Deep Docks and search the area’s right side. PC Gamer’s September 8, 2025 walkthrough points to this location. Look for the Wardenfly carrying a cage large enough to hold Hornet; an ordinary Wardenfly is not the target.
Greymoor and Bilewater
The Wardenfly reference also lists Greymoor and Bilewater as encounter areas. Greymoor has additional progression conditions, so reaching the area alone does not guarantee the cage enemy will appear. Encounter placement can depend on progression; if it is not present, check another documented area rather than assuming the event is unavailable. Let it catch you—don’t defeat it
- Approach the cage-carrying Wardenfly and give it room to attack.
- Let it trap Hornet. Do not kill it first: the cage Wardenfly does not respawn after it is defeated, according to PC Gamer and the Wardenfly reference.
- After the capture, continue through The Slab’s prison sequence to recover Hornet’s equipment.
Important: capture strips Hornet of her equipment, including her Needle and cloak. She starts the prison sequence with only a weak kick, so this route is a deliberate challenge, not a harmless shortcut.
Can you reach The Slab without being kidnapped?
Yes. You can enter The Slab by going west from Choral Chambers. This is an alternate, initially limited way into the area; it does not trigger the Wardenfly capture or the same gear-stripped prison arrival. The Key of Apostate opens the broader area without requiring you to be kidnapped. The The Slab reference describes both access routes.

If the Wardenfly is gone
If you killed the cage-carrying Wardenfly or acquired Faydown Cloak before being captured, the optional kidnapping may no longer be available on that playthrough: the specific enemy does not respawn, and the documented capture window ends at Faydown Cloak. You can still reach The Slab from Choral Chambers, but that alternate route is access to the area, not a way to replay the capture sequence.
