FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles is worth playing if you want a deep, story-driven tactical RPG—and the two included versions make it easier to choose between modern conveniences and the original’s feel. Square Enix’s 2025 release preserves the series’ grid-based battles and political drama, while its Enhanced edition adds voice acting, a revised script, faster play and a revamped interface. It is an enhanced revival, not a ground-up remake.
Is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles worth playing?
For players who enjoy turn-based strategy, character building and a serious political story, yes. Its combat asks you to think about terrain, positioning and turn order, then develop a squad through jobs and abilities. The story follows Ramza Beoulve and his childhood companion Delita as war and political conflict engulf Ivalice, where rival noble houses and class divisions shape the stakes.
That depth comes with friction. In a review of the PS5 Enhanced edition, TechRadar’s Harry Padoan praised the narrative, combat, visuals and convenience features, but also reported difficulty spikes, occasional camera awkwardness and uneven voice performances. Padoan disclosed more than 50 hours of play through the main story and a substantial amount of side content; that is his review playtime, not a completion-time estimate for every player. TechRadar’s review is one published assessment, not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience.

Enhanced and Classic: what changes?
The release contains two distinct presentations. Enhanced updates the look and interface and adds modern conveniences; Classic recreates the original graphics and gameplay, paired with the War of the Lions translation. Classic is a separate version within the release, not a switch that simply strips the Enhanced edition’s new features away.
Rank #2
| Version | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | Improved graphics, fully voiced dialogue, revised and enriched script, added character conversations, revamped UI, autosave, fast-forward, new difficulty options and other quality-of-life updates. Square Enix identifies Squire as the more accessible difficulty setting. | Players who want the updated presentation, voice performances and convenience features. |
| Classic | Original 1997 graphics and gameplay, presented with the War of the Lions translation. | Players who prefer the original visual and gameplay presentation. |
Square Enix described Classic as “a nostalgic recreation of the game, developed for players who want to experience the original FINAL FANTASY TACTICS from 1997.” The publisher’s announcement of the release outlines the Enhanced edition’s revised script, voice acting, graphics, difficulty options, interface and quality-of-life changes; its launch announcement also names fast-forward and added conversations.
How the tactical combat works
Battles hinge on more than choosing an attack. Terrain and positioning affect how you approach an encounter, while turn order determines when to move, strike or use an ability. Between battles, job and ability choices let you shape a squad to meet different challenges. Square Enix says the game includes more than 20 jobs and 300 abilities; those are publisher-reported content counts, not a measure of how many options any one character can use at once.
Rank #3
This system-heavy structure is a major part of the appeal if you enjoy building a team and solving encounters through planning. It is also why players seeking fast, real-time combat should look elsewhere: the central experience is deliberate, turn-based strategy.
Which version should you play?
Choose Enhanced for a first playthrough
Enhanced is the natural starting point if you want voiced scenes, updated presentation and features that reduce downtime. Fast-forward can help move through slower stretches, autosave adds convenience, and Squire offers a more accessible difficulty option according to Square Enix’s product information. The revised dialogue also gives this edition its own presentation rather than merely reproducing the original text and interface.
Rank #4
Choose Classic for the original presentation
Classic is for players who value the 1997 graphics and gameplay. Its use of the War of the Lions translation means the text presentation is not identical to the original 1997 release, even as the version restores the original visual and gameplay feel. It is a more direct choice for series veterans who want that older presentation than for newcomers seeking the new voice work and interface.

What to know before buying
TechRadar’s review listed physical and digital Nintendo Switch editions, while it reported that Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions were digital-only at the time of review. Availability can change by region and retailer, so check the current platform or store listing if you specifically want a physical copy. The review’s buying information is a snapshot from its publication period, not a live inventory check.
TechRadar also reported accessibility options including sound visualization, speaker-name display, subtitles for sound effects, volume sliders, English and Japanese voice options, and text in Japanese, English, German and French; it reported no colorblind mode. Those details are from its PS5 review and may vary or change across platform builds, so consult the current listing or in-game options if a particular accessibility feature is essential.
Verdict
The Ivalice Chronicles is a strong return for a tactical RPG whose strengths are its layered battles, flexible character development and political story. Enhanced is the best entry point for most newcomers; Classic gives returning players a faithful-feeling route back to the original graphics and gameplay, with the War of the Lions translation. Expect some dated friction alongside the improvements—especially if difficulty spikes or camera handling frustrate you—and choose it for strategy and story, not action-RPG combat.
