Is Opera GX available on Linux?
Yes. Opera announced the Linux release on March 19, 2026. At launch, the company listed Debian-, Ubuntu-, Fedora- and openSUSE-based distributions, with .deb and .rpm packages. Opera later added Flathub and Snap Store availability. These are Opera’s stated distribution options; the listings do not establish compatibility with every Linux distribution or processor architecture. What does Opera GX include on Linux?
Opera lists these features for Linux:
- GX Control: RAM and network limiters, plus Hot Tabs Killer, which Opera says can close resource-intensive tabs.
- Gaming integrations: Twitch and Discord in the sidebar, and GX Corner for gaming-related content.
- Customization: themes, sounds, shaders, visual effects, and layout options. Opera’s launch blog said its GX Store had over 10,000 preset mods on March 19, 2026; its April 23 follow-up reported over 11,000. Both are dated company-reported catalog counts. Opera’s launch blog and April follow-up provide those figures.
- Blocking and privacy tools: ad and tracker blocking, cryptojacking protection, and an optional built-in VPN, according to Opera.
Opera’s Linux feature comparison identifies two omissions: Live Wallpapers and system icon customization are not yet included. The phrase “full feature set” should therefore be understood as the core GX capabilities Opera brought to Linux, not literal parity with every desktop feature.
How do you install Opera GX on Linux?
Choose a distribution-appropriate package or store listing from Opera’s official download options. At launch, Opera described downloading the .deb or .rpm package and opening it with the system package manager; a manual setup guide is also available from Opera’s GX page. Flathub and Snap Store became additional options on April 23, 2026.

- Debian- or Ubuntu-based system: Opera listed a .deb package at launch.
- Fedora- or openSUSE-based system: Opera listed an .rpm package at launch.
- Flathub or Snap: Opera later announced availability through both stores. Check the listing and your distribution’s setup before installing.
The available source material does not establish that one installation channel is faster, safer, or preferable in all cases.
Does Opera GX work on Steam Deck?
Opera says Steam Deck owners can install GX from Desktop Mode: switch to Desktop Mode, open Discover, and search for Opera GX. This is an optional way to use the browser on a handheld; Steam Deck hardware is not required to use Opera GX on Linux. See Opera’s Steam Deck instructions.

Will GX Control improve gaming performance?
Opera says GX Control is designed to let users limit browser RAM and network use so games can retain system resources; Hot Tabs Killer can close tabs that consume too many resources. The official launch material does not provide measured Linux gaming benchmarks or frame-rate results, so a specific performance gain cannot be inferred from the feature description.
What does Opera say about privacy?
Opera says Linux GX does not collect location data, browsing history, page content, search queries, or information entered in forms. It also describes the optional VPN as zero-log and independently audited, and says data shared to operate and improve the product is limited to what is necessary and requires consent. These are Opera’s claims, not independent verification of every data-collection practice. Opera’s privacy statement provides further detail; the product page also says users can turn off personalization. GX product details list its blocking features and VPN.

What else has Opera added since launch?
On April 21, 2026, Opera announced Playground, an opt-in feature hub available in GX for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Opera lists tools including Panic Button and Fake My History. Its availability on Linux does not mean every desktop feature is present there. In its March 19 launch announcement, Opera also said GX had more than 34 million users worldwide; that is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited count.
