To find a spooky game that isn’t horror, search for the atmosphere and activity you want—such as cartoon ghosts, a haunted-house puzzle adventure, or a Halloween RPG—then check its scares, content guidance, gameplay pressure, and platform. “Spooky” can mean a playful ghost story or an unsettling mystery; it does not guarantee a comfortable experience for every player.
Search by the kind of spooky game you want
Searching only for “spooky games” can mix together very different experiences. Try a phrase that names both the mood and the gameplay:
- “Spooky not scary games” for curated lists framed around lighter scares. Steam has a curator page with that focus: Spooky Not Scary.
- “Cozy supernatural game” for a slower game with ghosts or other supernatural characters.
- “Haunted house puzzle adventure” or “cartoon ghost game” for playful exploration and problem-solving.
- “Halloween RPG” or “Halloween adventure” for costumes, quests, and seasonal festivities.
- “Cozy autumn mystery” if you want an eerie setting with investigation rather than horror action.
Common Sense Media’s Games That Are Spooky But Not Too Scary is another starting point; its list can be filtered by age and includes brief descriptions. Neither a curator page nor an age filter can guarantee that a game will feel comfortable to a particular player.
Check what “not scary” means for you
Before choosing, look beyond the art style and genre label. A cute or cozy presentation can still include moments some players find unsettling, while a game with ghosts may focus more on puzzles or routine tasks than on frightening the player.

- Scare style: Look for mentions of jump scares, threatening pursuit, monsters, or eerie sound and imagery.
- Content: Check for violence and mature themes or references. “Mild” or “not present” in a guide is useful context, not a prediction of an individual reaction.
- Gameplay pressure: Find out whether the game includes timed challenges, failure penalties, or tense action. Puzzle difficulty can be a separate consideration from scariness.
- What you do: Decide whether you want a life simulation, puzzles, exploration, action adventure, role-playing, or multiplayer play.
- Practical fit: Confirm the platform you own and read the game’s current store-page details before buying.
This distinction matters especially with “cozy” games. An academic analysis of Cult of the Lamb, DREDGE, and Oxenfree discusses how visual or gameplay comfort can exist alongside narrative danger, ghosts, monsters, and Gothic or horror elements. The label alone does not tell you everything about the experience.

Luigi’s Mansion 3: cartoon haunted-house puzzles
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a Nintendo Switch game released in 2019. Common Sense Media describes it as a comical, lighthearted haunted-house game, with cartoonish mild violence and puzzle-based exploration, and recommends it for ages 8+. The guide also notes that some puzzles can be challenging. That makes it a possible fit for someone who wants ghostly atmosphere and problem-solving, but the age guidance is editorial advice—not a guarantee about a particular player’s sensitivity.
Common Sense Media reviewer Chad Sapieha calls it “a comical, lighthearted haunted house game exclusively for the Nintendo Switch that sees Mario’s brother exploring a ghost-infested hotel.” Read the Luigi’s Mansion 3 review for the guide’s full content notes.

Cozy Grove: supernatural life simulation
Cozy Grove is a life simulation about helping ghosts, crafting, fishing, and tending an island. Common Sense Media describes it as relaxing and marks violence and scariness as not present, while also noting ghosts and some mature references. Its review lists Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Check the current listing for the platform and edition you plan to play.
Its slower routine-based play may suit someone looking for a supernatural setting without horror-focused action. The ghost characters and mature references are still worth checking if those are concerns for you. See the Cozy Grove review for the guide’s content details.

It is a natural search starting point if the holiday setting matters more than a haunted-house atmosphere. That review does not establish current platform availability, so check the relevant store before choosing it.

Make a shortlist that matches your comfort level
- Name the mood and activity. Start with a specific search phrase such as “cartoon ghost puzzle game” or “Halloween RPG,” rather than relying on “spooky” alone.
- Read a concise content guide. Look for concrete notes on scares, violence, mature themes, and age guidance; use those notes as context rather than a personal guarantee.
- Check a second description where needed. A store category or “cozy” label may not explain the story’s danger or the game’s tense moments.
- Compare the play experience. Consider whether you prefer relaxed tasks, puzzles, exploration, or action, and whether challenging puzzles or failure pressure would bother you.
- Confirm platform and current availability. A review may name platforms, but availability can vary by region, edition, and time.
