CamSpace was Windows software designed to turn movement tracked by a webcam into game input. Its pitch was simple: hold or move a brightly colored object in view of the camera, then connect that movement to a game control. That was the idea—not a guarantee that every object, webcam, or game would work.
How CamSpace was supposed to work
A 2008 beta announcement described CamSpace as a downloadable program for playing games with a webcam. It said users could use “almost any brightly-colored object” as a controller and connect it to a game. The same announcement also presented CamSpace as an object-tracking platform for applications, with a CamTraxAPI extension for developers using C++, C#, VB, or .NET. cnBeta’s July 6, 2008 announcement attributes that description to the CamSpace Team, rather than to a named individual.
In practical terms, the camera had to see an object clearly enough for the software to track its movement, and that movement had to be associated with input the game could use. A can, stick, or banana were examples in a third-party description, not a verified list of objects guaranteed to work. Zigg’s CamSpace listing calls the software a free beta and describes webcam motion as the control method.
What you would have needed
- A webcam: The camera was the core input device. A historical download listing recommended a higher-resolution webcam for good results, but did not specify a minimum resolution or identify a tested modern model. CHIP’s listing makes that recommendation.
- A visible object: The software was described as tracking a brightly colored object. The historical descriptions do not establish that arbitrary household objects would track equally well.
- A game and usable input mapping: Movement had to translate into controls the game could accept. The available descriptions do not document supported games, mapping steps, or a complete control configuration procedure.
A USB webcam is a sensible category of device to consider for a webcam-based setup, but the historical sources do not verify a specific current webcam’s compatibility with CamSpace.

Can you set it up on a current PC?
That cannot be confirmed from the available historical material. It does not verify a current official download, support for current Windows versions, or compatibility with particular modern webcams. Nor does it provide a supported-device list or controlled tracking tests. Treat CamSpace as a historical concept unless you can independently verify the software’s source and compatibility before installing it.

What to check when considering a similar webcam controller
If your goal is to control games with camera-tracked movement, evaluate the setup around the game you actually want to play rather than assuming that any webcam-and-object combination will work.

- Operating-system support: Confirm that the software explicitly supports your Windows version.
- Camera compatibility: Look for a current supported-device list or compatibility statement; historical recommendations for higher resolution are not a substitute.
- Tracking conditions: Check whether the software specifies object appearance, lighting, camera placement, or other requirements.
- Game input mapping: Verify that tracked movement can be assigned to the buttons or axes your game needs.
