If a newly installed PC game will not open or crashes, start with a restart and the game’s own system requirements, then verify its files through the launcher. Next, update Windows and graphics drivers and temporarily close nonessential apps. If the problem persists, check whether the launcher or its online services are failing, then look up the exact error in the game’s official support guide. The right fix depends on the game, your PC, and when the failure occurs.
Record what happens before changing anything
Note whether the launcher opens, whether the game briefly appears to be running, and exactly when it exits. Copy any error message and keep any crash report the game provides. Also distinguish a failure to launch from a crash after the game has started; that detail can narrow the relevant support guidance.
Restart the PC and check the game’s requirements
- Restart your PC, then try launching the game once more.
- Find the game’s system requirements on its official store or support page.
- Compare the listed operating system, CPU, memory, and graphics requirements with your PC’s specifications.
Requirements vary by title, so there is no single hardware threshold that applies to every game. Steam notes that a system at or near a game’s minimum requirements may have launch or performance problems. Capcom likewise cautions that a PC below minimum requirements may not run a game; if it meets minimum but not recommended specifications, lowering graphics settings may help once you can reach them. Steam’s general troubleshooting guide and the game’s own requirements are better guides than generic PC benchmarks.
Verify the installed game files
A missing or damaged file can prevent a new installation from starting. Use the launcher’s built-in verification before deleting or reinstalling the game.

Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open your Library and select the game.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the scan finish; it may take several minutes.
Steam explains how file verification works. A file can fail verification because it is a local configuration file that should not be replaced; that result can be normal.
Other launchers
For Epic Games Launcher or another store, follow the current instructions for that launcher and the specific game. Epic’s game-specific guidance includes verifying files and, where appropriate, clearing the launcher cache. Labels and procedures can change, so use the current official support page rather than assuming Steam’s steps apply.

Update Windows and graphics drivers, then isolate app conflicts
- Install available Windows updates through Windows Update.
- Get graphics drivers from your GPU maker’s official support channel. Restart if the installer or Windows requests it.
- Temporarily close nonessential background software, such as overlays, capture tools, and other utilities, then try the game again.
Steam, Epic, and Capcom all identify updates or background software as troubleshooting areas, but an update is not guaranteed to fix a crash. Avoid permanently disabling security software. Only consider a narrowly targeted exclusion for a specific, trusted game if its publisher or security vendor recommends it, and follow that vendor’s instructions.
Check whether the launcher or its service is the problem
If the launcher itself crashes, will not open, or cannot download or start games, troubleshoot the launcher separately from the game. Epic recommends checking its service status, launcher updates and requirements, cache, graphics drivers, and background apps in its Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting guide. If a service is down, local changes to your PC may not help until service is restored.

Use fixes written for the specific game and error
Do not assume that a fix for one game applies to another. Epic’s Rocket League instructions, for example, specify a particular DirectX version, while its Fall Guys guidance includes repairing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables and collecting diagnostic files. These are title-specific procedures, not universal startup steps. Search the exact error message in the game’s official support knowledge base and follow guidance for your game and Windows version.
Do not start with registry edits, DLL downloads from unofficial sites, unofficial driver utilities, or reinstalling Windows. An advanced change needs a specific, error-related reason and authoritative instructions.

Contact support with useful diagnostic details
If the official game-specific steps do not resolve the problem, send the developer or publisher a concise report through its official support channel. Include:
- The exact error text and whether the game fails at launch or later.
- What you tried and the steps that reproduce the problem.
- Your PC make and model when relevant, CPU, GPU, and memory.
- Your Windows version and graphics-driver version.
- A crash report or diagnostic file, if support requests one.
Some publishers request a DxDiag report. Capcom’s instructions describe creating one by opening Run, entering dxdiag, and saving the report. Epic’s Fall Guys guidance also requests diagnostic files and the date and time of the error. Share diagnostic files only through an official channel and only when requested.
