Buy a game at launch when playing immediately is worth the price to you; wait when saving money or getting more information matters more. Before deciding, set the price you would be happy paying, then weigh the value of playing now against the difference between that price and the current price. A sale is an opportunity, not a guarantee—and no general calendar can predict when a particular game will be discounted.
Start with what playing now is worth to you
The launch decision is less about whether a game will eventually be cheaper and more about whether you want to pay the current price to play it sooner. Give yourself a personal maximum price before release, then ask whether the extra weeks or months of play are worth the gap between that amount and today’s price.

- Buy now if the game is a priority and you expect to play it right away.
- Wait if you have other games you would rather play first, or if you would be unhappy paying more than a later sale price.
- Wishlist it if you are interested but do not yet have a clear reason to buy at launch. Steam wishlist notifications can help you notice discounts without repeatedly checking the store; PC Gamer also recommends wishlisting in its Steam sale guide.
Do not let a displayed discount percentage make the decision for you. Compare the actual current price with your own maximum, and consider the edition and content you would really use.
When buying at launch makes sense
- You have a concrete plan to play immediately, rather than buying mainly because of hype or fear of missing out.
- Playing alongside friends, joining a time-sensitive multiplayer season, following community discussion, or avoiding spoilers matters enough to justify the price.
- You have checked recent independent reviews and understand what is known about the game’s performance and content.
- The launch price fits your budget even if the game does not receive a discount soon.
- A launch edition includes content you want, and its added cost is worthwhile to you.
When waiting is the better choice
- Your backlog includes games you would rather play first.
- You want more post-launch reviews, performance testing, patches, or player feedback before spending.
- You would regret paying the current price if the game were discounted shortly after you bought it.
- You are unsure whether the game is worth playing in its present state, especially if it is in Early Access.
- You can wait comfortably and use a wishlist or price-history reference to keep an eye on it, without assuming either can predict the next sale.
Check the purchase details before comparing prices
A useful comparison is about the actual purchase, not just the game’s headline price. Check these details for the storefront and region where you intend to buy:

- Timing: Decide how soon you realistically expect to play, and what playing earlier would add for you.
- Access type: Confirm whether the game is in Early Access or offers Advanced Access before its official release.
- Refund terms: Read the current policy for that storefront and region before relying on a refund as a way to respond to a later sale.
Steam’s rules are useful if you are buying on Steam, but they do not establish the policies of Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, other PC stores, or physical retailers. Check the terms that apply to your actual purchase.
What Steam’s sale calendar and discount rules mean
As of October 4, 2026, Steamworks lists four seasonal sale events per year. The scheduled 2026 events include the Autumn Sale from October 1 through October 8 and the Winter Sale from December 17, 2026 through January 4, 2027. These are Steam dates, not a forecast for an individual game’s discount; check Steam’s current seasonal sale information because schedules can change.

- Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
- Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way
- A cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, featuring fully voiced dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
- Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
- Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls
Steam’s published discount rules also explain why a recently released game may not be eligible for a seasonal sale:
- A game normally cannot be discounted for 30 days after release. The cooldown applies after an Early Access release and again after the full release.
- A base-price increase in any currency starts a 30-day discount cooldown.
- Seasonal sales are exempt from cooldowns caused by other discounts, but not from the release or price-increase cooldowns.
- An optional launch discount must be set up before release. It may run for 7–14 days and cannot exceed 40%.
These are Steam policy rules, not estimates of how much a buyer will save or how soon any particular game will be discounted. Valve says publishers have future opportunities to discount games, but that guidance is not a promise about a given title or its timing.

- A fast-paced, cinematic action game set on the shape-shifting Carcosa
- Stunning graphics and gameplay
- Master bullet ballet combat
- Experience an unconventional story and journey
If the game goes on sale after you buy it on Steam
Steam does not automatically adjust your purchase price or refund the difference. Its guidance says you may request a refund for the original purchase and buy the game again at the current sale price, subject to Steam’s refund policy. That is not a guaranteed price match: check the current Steam refund policy and eligibility before counting on this option.
Pre-orders, Advanced Access, and Early Access
Pre-orders
Steam says a pre-order can be refunded at any time before release under its standard policy. If a pre-purchase includes Advanced Access, the pre-release refund option ends when Advanced Access begins. Check Steam’s pre-purchase guidance for the applicable terms.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Early Access
Steam applies its standard refund policy to Early Access purchases. Its advice is to buy only if you are excited to play the game in its current state; if not, wait for a future update or full release. A planned future version is not a substitute for judging whether the version available now is worth the price. See Steam’s Early Access guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use price history as context, not a forecast
A price-history page such as SteamDB can show past Steam prices, while a wishlist can make it easier to notice a later deal. Neither establishes when a specific game will next go on sale or what its future price will be. For an upcoming purchase, compare the game’s own price history and publisher announcements with your personal maximum price; a general seasonal calendar cannot answer that question.
