Xbox has since named the console Project Helix and said it plans to send alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Its announcement did not give a retail release date.
Did AMD confirm the next Xbox will launch in 2027?
No. On AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su said: “Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” The key phrase is “to support”: AMD described the aim of its development work, not a Microsoft-confirmed date when shoppers can buy the console. The earnings-call transcript records Su’s statement.
AMD’s comment is meaningful evidence that work is underway toward a 2027 target, but it does not establish that development, manufacturing, or Microsoft’s plans will result in a consumer launch that year. AMD is Microsoft’s chip partner, not the source of a retail-date announcement.
What is Project Helix?
On March 11, 2026, Xbox publicly identified its next-generation first-party console as Project Helix. Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and uses a custom AMD SoC. Xbox also said the system is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. These are the announced aims; the update did not provide consumer specifications, price, or a release date. Xbox’s Project Helix announcement has the details.

Xbox and AMD had announced a multi-year strategic partnership in June 2025 to co-engineer silicon for a portfolio of devices, including future first-party consoles and cloud. AMD describes semi-custom products as customer-specific solutions; its annual report says such SoCs power Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, among other systems. The partnership announcement and AMD’s 2025 annual report provide that background.
What does Xbox’s 2027 announcement mean?
Xbox said it plans to ship alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Ronald described this as a developer milestone: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” An alpha shipment lets developers work with hardware; it is not a statement that the finished console will be on sale to the public in 2027.

Read the two 2027 statements by the milestone they describe:
| Statement | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| AMD CEO Lisa Su: development is progressing well “to support a launch in 2027” (Q4 2025 earnings call) | AMD’s SoC development work was progressing toward supporting a 2027 launch target. | A confirmed Microsoft retail date or a guarantee of consumer availability in 2027. |
| Xbox: plans to ship Project Helix alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027 (March 11, 2026) | A planned start for developer hardware shipments. | A consumer launch date; Xbox’s announcement gave none. |
When will the next Xbox come out?
There is no consumer release date in the cited official Project Helix announcement. The most precise answer is that AMD said its development work was progressing to support a 2027 launch, while Xbox’s specifically stated 2027 plan is to begin sending alpha hardware to developers. Neither statement confirms when consumers will be able to buy Project Helix.
