Microsoft reportedly paused its own first-party Xbox handheld project “for now” in May 2025, redirecting effort toward Windows 11 gaming improvements and handhelds made by third-party partners. That report did not confirm a permanent cancellation. The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are separate ASUS-built Windows gaming PCs developed with Xbox, not the shelved first-party device or native Xbox consoles.
Did Xbox cancel its handheld?
Not according to what has been confirmed publicly. On May 30, 2025, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported, citing unnamed sources, that Microsoft had parked its internal handheld project “for now” and shifted team priorities toward improving Windows 11 gaming on handhelds such as ASUS’s Project Kennan. Corden described the device as “sidelined (for now),” not permanently cancelled. The report said prototypes existed and suggested the project might return, but those details were attributed to sources, not confirmed by Microsoft. It also cautioned that the internal project’s reported codename, “Pembrooke,” might be wrong. Windows Central’s report
As of October 4, 2026, the reviewed public statements do not establish that this specific handheld has been resumed or permanently cancelled. Xbox President Sarah Bond later said the company was “100% looking at making things in the future” and had next-generation hardware in development. That statement concerned Xbox hardware generally; it did not confirm that the paused handheld project was active again. Windows Central’s interview coverage
What is the ROG Xbox Ally?
The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are Windows 11 gaming handheld PCs made by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox. They combine an Xbox-oriented full-screen experience with access to PC games and storefronts. Their Xbox branding and interface do not make them first-party Xbox consoles: they are distinct from the internal Microsoft handheld described in the May 2025 report. Xbox announced the pair on June 8, 2025, and said they became available on October 16, 2025. Xbox’s announcement Xbox’s availability announcement

Can the ROG Xbox Ally play Xbox games?
It can access Xbox games through several routes, but it does not run every Xbox console game natively. Xbox described native PC play, cloud gaming and Remote Play from an Xbox console as supported ways to play. Native play applies to compatible PC titles, including supported Xbox Play Anywhere games; cloud gaming and Remote Play depend on the relevant game, service and setup. Windows Central has specifically noted that the Ally cannot natively run Xbox console games as a console does. Xbox’s launch details Windows Central on console-game compatibility

In its October 16, 2025 announcement, Xbox said the Play Anywhere catalog included more than 1,000 games. That is Xbox’s company-published catalog figure from that date, not an independent count or a promise that every title in the catalog is playable on the handheld. Xbox’s launch details
Why prioritize third-party handhelds?
The Windows Central report said Microsoft was directing effort toward Windows 11 gaming performance and the handheld experience on partner-made devices. That matters because the ASUS handhelds run Windows: the software experience, not just the physical hardware, affects how usable PC games are on a compact screen with built-in controls.

Microsoft’s Windows documentation for handheld-compatible games identifies practical areas developers may need to address, including readable interface text, controller iconography, gamepad text entry, display support and sensible handheld defaults. Those are examples of the compatibility work involved; they do not prove the status of Microsoft’s internal hardware project. Microsoft’s handheld compatibility guidance

On March 11, 2026, Xbox described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. It said developer alpha hardware was planned to begin shipping in 2027, and that Xbox mode would come to Windows 11 after debuting on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. The 2027 timing refers to developer hardware, not a consumer release date. This announcement confirms continued work on console hardware and Windows experiences, but does not say whether Microsoft’s separately reported handheld project has been revived.
