Yes, if you want a noticeably better handheld display, a larger battery, a little less weight, or newer wireless hardware—and the cost makes sense for you. The Steam Deck OLED is a refinement of the original LCD model, not a major performance-generation leap. If your LCD Deck already meets your needs, there is no need to replace it just to get more game performance.
Steam Deck OLED vs. LCD: the key differences
Both models use a 1280×800 display, but the OLED model has a larger HDR OLED panel and a higher refresh-rate ceiling. Valve’s published specifications show the following differences:
| Feature | Original Steam Deck LCD | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch, 1280×800 LCD | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED |
| Maximum refresh rate | Up to 60Hz | Up to 90Hz |
| Battery capacity | 40Wh | 50Wh |
| Weight | Valve does not state a figure on the cited OLED product page; it says the OLED model is about 30g lighter | About 640g |
| Wireless | Older generation; the cited specifications do not state the version | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 |
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results. Valve lists the Steam Deck technical specifications, and its model comparison shows the main hardware differences.
What makes the OLED model feel better?
The display is the clearest upgrade
The OLED screen is 0.4 inches larger, uses HDR OLED technology, and can refresh at up to 90Hz instead of the LCD model’s 60Hz. That gives the OLED a more capable display, but it does not mean every game will run at 90 frames per second. The game and your settings determine the frame rate you actually get.

#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Steam Support notes that setting an application’s refresh rate above the Deck’s maximum will not improve performance and can drain the battery faster. See the Steam Deck basic use and troubleshooting guide for its refresh-rate guidance.
The larger battery helps, but does not promise a set runtime
Valve lists a 50Wh battery for OLED and 40Wh for LCD, and describes the OLED model as offering longer battery life. The capacity difference is useful if you play away from an outlet, but there is no universal number of extra hours: runtime varies with the game, brightness, frame-rate choices, and other settings.

It is lighter, with newer wireless specifications
Valve says the OLED system weighs about 640g, roughly 30g or 5% less than the LCD model. That is a modest reduction, but it can be welcome during handheld sessions. OLED also adds Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Those are specification upgrades, not a guarantee of faster internet or better accessory performance; practical results depend on your network and connected devices.
Is it a meaningful performance upgrade?
Do not buy the OLED model expecting a dramatic across-the-board increase in game performance. The documented changes center on the screen, battery, weight, and wireless hardware. If your main reason for replacing an LCD Deck is a large leap in how demanding games run, the evidence here does not establish that kind of upgrade.

If you already own the LCD Steam Deck
Upgrade if the display, battery, lower weight, or newer wireless matters enough to justify what you would spend after accounting for your current device. Keep the LCD if you are satisfied with its screen and battery, or if you mainly want a major performance jump.
If this is your first Steam Deck
The OLED model has the stronger feature set if its current price is acceptable to you. An LCD model may be the better value when its actual local price is meaningfully lower and the savings matter more than the OLED improvements. Compare current prices and availability where you live; they are not established here.
