ENGAGE is a custom, battery-free Game Boy emulator prototype that harvests energy from sunlight and button presses. It can run classic Game Boy cartridges, but it does not play continuously in all conditions: power interruptions can occur, and its checkpointing system lets a player resume when energy returns. It is a research build, not a modified retail Nintendo Game Boy or a product established as available for sale.

How does the battery-free Game Boy work?

ENGAGE combines energy harvesting with low-power computing and saved game state. Solar cells on the front of its custom chassis collect light, while mechanical switches beneath the directional pad and A/B buttons generate energy when pressed. A Texas Instruments BQ25570 manages harvested power, which is stored in a 3.3 mF capacitor. The project documents six harvesting switches—four for the directional pad and one each for A and B—and identifies them as ZF AFIG-0007 units; the solar cells are Panasonic AM-1417CA. These are components in this particular research build, not a guarantee that substitutes will perform the same way. The ENGAGE repository documents its hardware and software.

Pressing a button moves a magnet through a tightly wound coil. The changing magnetic field generates electricity, so interaction contributes energy as the player uses the controls. The harvested energy is intermittent and limited, however; button presses supplement the solar input rather than providing a promise of uninterrupted power.

Computing, cartridges, and saved state

The prototype runs a Game Boy emulator on an Ambiq Apollo3 Blue ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. A dedicated 512 KB Fujitsu FRAM chip stores nonvolatile checkpoints. ENGAGE uses differential checkpointing rather than repeatedly copying all volatile memory, helping preserve enough system state to recover after power loss. Its cartridge interface adapts the platform’s 3 V system to the 5 V logic required by classic cartridges. The research describes play with cartridges including Tetris and Super Mario Land. The ENGAGE paper and project repository describe the system.

Can a Game Boy run on solar power?

ENGAGE demonstrates that a custom Game Boy emulator can harvest solar energy, but its documented design also relies on button-generated energy. It is not evidence that an ordinary Nintendo Game Boy can simply be switched to solar power, nor that sunlight alone will sustain play in every setting.

A 2020 Northwestern University release described the prototype operating on a not-too-cloudy day with at least moderate button activity. In those reported conditions, interruptions typically lasted less than one second for every ten seconds of gameplay. The team said that pattern was playable for some games, naming Chess, Solitaire, and Tetris, but not yet for all action games. That is a condition-specific report about the prototype, not a universal runtime guarantee or an independent test. Northwestern’s 2020 release describes the demonstration.

Do button presses really power the console?

Yes, but “button mashing” can give the wrong impression if it suggests that pressing buttons continuously powers the console. In ENGAGE, button movement generates some electricity through the magnet-and-coil mechanism; the solar cells are the other source. Harvested energy varies, and the console may pause when available power falls short. The design makes the player’s actions part of the energy supply, not a replacement for reliable stored battery power.

Does it keep playing when the power cuts out?

No: the system can lose enough power to interrupt play. Its important feature is recovery, not uninterrupted operation. ENGAGE tracks memory use and saves checkpoints to FRAM, allowing it to restore game state after power returns rather than forcing a restart from the beginning. The research describes minimal game-state persistence and differential checkpointing as part of making a battery-free interactive device usable despite energy failures.

Can it play original Game Boy cartridges?

Yes. ENGAGE has a custom cartridge interface designed to connect its 3 V platform to the 5 V logic expected by classic Game Boy cartridges. The research names Tetris and Super Mario Land among the games it can run. This compatibility belongs to the custom emulator prototype; it does not mean a stock Game Boy has been redesigned or that every cartridge has been tested.

Why is its screen smaller than the original Game Boy’s?

The display reflects a trade-off among energy demand, refresh rate, and drive-circuit complexity. ENGAGE uses a Japan Display LPM013M126A panel measuring 26.02 × 27.82 mm with a 176 × 176 pixel matrix. The original Game Boy screen is listed in the repository as 47 × 43 mm with 160 × 144 pixels. So ENGAGE’s panel is physically smaller while having a higher pixel count in each dimension. The team rejected e-ink for this design because its refresh was too slow and its drive circuitry too complex. These specifications describe the prototype, not a general claim about all low-power displays. The project repository lists the display and design choices.

How ENGAGE fits into battery-free gaming research

ENGAGE is one research approach: solar cells plus energy harvested from button motion, paired with checkpoints that make interruptions recoverable. A separate 2026 TU Delft record describes TURNER, a modular battery-free games console powered by a hand crank and solar cells. Its mixed-methods study involved 60 participants and examined how energy harvesting shapes gameplay, including player strategies and considerations such as failure, ergonomics, and integrating energy generation into play. TURNER is a separate research probe, not a successor model of ENGAGE. The TU Delft record describes that work.

The comparison that matters is not simply which console is “battery-free.” Different energy sources impose different demands on how people play; interruptions, state recovery, control ergonomics, and display power all shape the experience. ENGAGE’s contribution is to show how an emulator can pair intermittent harvested energy with saved state, while the reported interruptions make clear that energy harvesting does not automatically mean continuous gameplay.
