What to Expect From Xbox in 2026: Games, Project Helix and More

Xbox’s 2026 outlook includes announced games, a PC-and-console-focused next-generation system called Project Helix, and a strategy spanning console, Windows and cloud. Here is what is confirmed—and what is not.

Xbox’s 2026 outlook rests on three confirmed developments: a slate of announced games, work on a next-generation console called Project Helix, and a platform strategy that connects console, Windows PC and cloud. The crucial distinction is that Project Helix has a developer-hardware milestone for 2027, not a confirmed consumer launch date. Several game dates announced early in 2026 have now passed, so those announcements should be treated as schedules at the time—not confirmation of a game’s current availability.

What is coming to Xbox in 2026?

Xbox’s January 22 Developer_Direct named four games for its 2026 slate: Beast of Reincarnation, Fable, Forza Horizon 6 and Kiln. The dates and platform plans below are what Xbox announced at the time. As of October 5, 2026, some of those announced windows have passed; the announcement alone does not establish whether a game has since launched or whether its schedule changed.

Game Timing announced Platforms announced Game Pass announcement
Beast of Reincarnation Summer 2026 Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and cloud; Xbox Play Anywhere Day-one availability with Game Pass Ultimate
Fable Autumn 2026 Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5 Game Pass Ultimate at launch
Forza Horizon 6 May 19, 2026 Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Steam; PlayStation 5 described as coming later in 2026 Game Pass Ultimate at launch
Kiln Spring 2026 Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5 Game Pass Ultimate at launch

These are Xbox’s January 22, 2026 announcements, not a verified October availability list. Check each game’s current official listing for its release status, platforms and subscription inclusion. In particular, the PlayStation 5 plans show that Xbox’s 2026 slate is not limited to Xbox console exclusives.

What Xbox said about the games

The Developer_Direct described Forza Horizon 6 as set in Japan and said it would have 550 cars to collect and customize at launch. That figure is Xbox’s announcement, not an independent count or assessment. Xbox also said all four Developer_Direct games supported Xbox Play Anywhere.

What other Xbox games were announced?

Xbox’s June Showcase recap added more announcements and updates, including an Xbox 25th-anniversary console and controller announcement. The recap identified Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives. It also said previously announced multiplatform games would keep their existing platform plans. The recap, as summarized here, does not establish release dates for those projects, so they should not be presented as confirmed 2026 launches.

When is the next Xbox coming out?

Xbox has not announced a consumer release date or price for Project Helix in the cited March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire post. The milestone it did announce is that it planned to send alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer milestone, not a retail launch window.

What Xbox has confirmed about Project Helix

Jason Ronald, Xbox’s VP of Next Generation, said the company was “deep in development” on Project Helix. Xbox describes it as a next-generation first-party console designed to play Xbox console and PC games. The post says it uses a custom AMD system-on-a-chip developed through a multi-year partnership and that Xbox is committed to keeping games from four generations playable for years to come.

Those statements leave important retail and compatibility questions unanswered. The post gives no final technical specifications, price, consumer release date or exact list of backward-compatible games. Xbox’s performance language is a company claim, not independent benchmark evidence. Its commitment to four-generation game support also does not, by itself, specify which individual games will work.

What to buy or use while Helix is in development

For someone choosing hardware now, Xbox Series X is the current Xbox console option identified in the official Microsoft Store materials. Project Helix remains a future platform with no consumer launch details in the cited announcement. The materials do not establish current inventory or pricing, so check the Store for those details rather than treating an announced future console as a purchasable alternative.

Will Project Helix play PC games?

Xbox says Project Helix is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. That is the announced direction, not a full compatibility specification: Xbox has not published the exact PC storefronts, game requirements, supported titles or operating details in the cited post. Until those details are announced, “plays PC games” should not be read as a guarantee that every PC game or store will work.

How Xbox is connecting console, PC and cloud

Xbox’s platform strategy extends beyond a single device. In its March 11 Project Helix post and January Developer_Direct recap, the company described access through console, Windows PC, cloud, and, for supported games, handheld devices. Xbox says purchases of supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles from Xbox or Windows stores can be played on Xbox console, PC or supported handhelds, with saves, add-ons and achievements carried across. This is a supported-title policy, not a promise that every game works on every device.

Xbox said its Play Anywhere catalog had grown to more than 1,500 games and that 500 development teams had shipped games with the program, figures published by Xbox on March 11, 2026. To choose how to access a specific game, check its platform listing and the relevant purchase or subscription details. A Game Pass announcement for one title does not mean every Xbox game is included.

What Xbox’s leadership and studio changes mean

In a February 20, 2026 CEO message, Asha Sharma described “the return of Xbox” as a renewed commitment to console alongside PC, mobile and cloud. She also wrote, “Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything.” Microsoft’s editor’s note said Microsoft Gaming was known as Xbox as of April 23, 2026, and identified Sharma as CEO Xbox.

On September 22, Matt Booty announced the elimination of 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios and central functions, alongside a studio reorganization. The update said Activision would expand its remit and develop the next Halo title with a new purpose-built team, while a small Halo Studios team would support the community and games already in market. It also said Undead Labs had transitioned with a new publisher and that State of Decay 3 would release day one on Game Pass. These are organizational changes; the announcement does not establish that a particular project will be delayed, cancelled or improved as a result.
