How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run an Open-World MMORPG

Use the exact MMORPG’s official PC requirements to check your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage, DirectX, and internet before downloading or upgrading.

To find out whether your PC can run an open-world MMORPG, compare its components and software with the official requirements for the exact game and platform: Windows version, CPU, graphics card and video memory, RAM, storage, DirectX, and internet access. Check both minimum and recommended specifications. Meeting minimum requirements is not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance in every situation.

Start with the exact game and platform

There is no universal “MMORPG PC requirement.” One game may need a newer operating system or much more storage than another, and the same title can have different requirements across platforms. Find the publisher’s current PC requirements page for the game you want, and note when you checked it; specifications can change.

Use the requirement page for the PC edition you intend to play, not a console listing or a third-party summary. If you have not picked a game yet, choose a likely title first: a check against general MMORPG specs cannot establish compatibility with a specific game.

Find your PC’s specifications

Record the following for the computer you will play on. Windows menus and labels can vary by version, so use your system’s Settings and built-in system-information tools to identify these details; do not rely on a laptop or PC’s marketing name alone.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Operating system: Windows edition and version, and whether it is 64-bit.
  • Processor (CPU): the complete model name, not just “Intel Core i5” or “Ryzen 5.”
  • Graphics (GPU): the dedicated graphics-card model and its video memory (VRAM), if listed. A PC with integrated graphics may use system RAM for graphics.
  • Memory (RAM): installed system memory.
  • Storage: the drive type, free space on the drive where the game will be installed, and any required read speed stated by the publisher.
  • Other requirements: DirectX version or support, internet availability, and any additional notes on the game’s requirement page.

If a requirement names a specific processor or graphics card, compare the full model. Brand or product-family names alone do not tell you whether two parts perform similarly. When you need to assess equivalence between different models, consult a current, reputable hardware comparison rather than assuming that a newer-sounding name is automatically faster.

Compare minimum and recommended requirements line by line

Put your PC’s details beside the game’s official minimum and recommended tiers. Treat each requirement as its own check: a strong GPU does not make up for an unsupported operating system, too little RAM, or insufficient free storage.

CyberPowerPC Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 5 5500, Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB
  • System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Meets minimum: your PC matches or exceeds every minimum requirement. This indicates that it clears the publisher’s listed baseline, not that it will deliver your preferred resolution, graphics quality, or frame rate.
  • Meets recommended: your PC matches or exceeds every recommended requirement. This is the more relevant comparison if you want the publisher’s recommended experience, but it still does not guarantee identical performance in every area or situation in the game.
  • Between the tiers: if some components meet recommended specs and others only meet minimum—or fall below a listed requirement—your experience is less certain. Identify the shortfall rather than treating the PC as an overall pass.

Pay close attention to notes attached to the requirements. If a publisher gives an explicit resolution, graphics preset, or frame-rate target, report it as the publisher’s stated target for that tier—not as an independent guarantee for every PC. If the page gives no performance target, do not infer one from the word “minimum” or “recommended.”

Check more than CPU, GPU, and RAM

Several less-obvious requirements can block installation or affect whether the game is suitable for your setup:

The mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory offers excellent value and proven stability.
  • Operating system and architecture: verify the required Windows version and 64-bit support.
  • DirectX: check the version listed by the publisher. Graphics hardware alone does not establish that every software requirement is met.
  • Disk space and speed: distinguish total drive capacity from free space available for the installation. If the page specifies a disk read speed, check that too.
  • Internet: confirm that you have the broadband connection or other online access the game requires. An MMORPG’s hardware check does not substitute for checking connectivity.
  • Resolution and settings: compare any stated target with the resolution and graphics preset you actually want to use.

What official requirements look like: three PC examples

These examples show why requirements must be checked game by game. They are publisher-listed specifications and targets, not results from independent testing. For a decision today, open the official page again: requirements and game availability can change.

Game and source Minimum Recommended Important qualification
New World: Aeternum, PC — Amazon Games support Windows 10/11 64-bit; Intel Core i5-10500 or AMD Ryzen 3 3300X; 8 GB RAM at 3200 MHz; NVIDIA GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD Radeon RX 590; DirectX 11 and 12; broadband; 100 GB available storage; 2000 MB/s disk read speed. Windows 10/11 64-bit; Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X; 16 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600; DirectX 11 and 12; broadband; 100 GB available storage; 2500 MB/s disk read speed. The support page says internet is required and specifications may evolve. Its Steam listing says the game was delisted January 15, 2026, and is scheduled to go offline January 31, 2027; check the Steam listing for current availability and service information.
FINAL FANTASY XIV, Windows PC — Square Enix requirements Windows 11 64-bit; Intel Core i5-8400 or higher; at least 8 GB RAM; GTX 970 4 GB or Radeon RX 480 4 GB or higher; 140 GB or more hard-disk space; 1280×720; broadband; DirectX 11. Windows 11 64-bit; Intel Core i7-9700 or higher; at least 16 GB RAM; RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB or higher; SSD with 140 GB or more; 1920×1080; broadband; DirectX 11. Square Enix dates the PC requirements to July 17, 2025, and says they are subject to change.
Square Enix PC Steam example — Square Enix Support Windows 10/11 64-bit; Ryzen 3 1200 or Core i3-6100; 8 GB RAM; Radeon RX 460 or GeForce GTX 750; DirectX 12; 10 GB available space; 2 GB VRAM. Windows 10/11 64-bit; Ryzen 3 1200 or Core i5-6400; 8 GB RAM; Radeon RX 470, Intel Arc A750, or GTX 1060 with 6 GB VRAM; DirectX 12; 10 GB available space. The minimum tier states a target of 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low. The recommended tier states 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest and requires 16 GB system RAM when running on an Intel GPU. These are the support article’s stated targets and note, not a general FPS guarantee.

For New World: Aeternum, Amazon Games lists a 100 GB storage requirement for both tiers, but also specifies different disk read speeds. For FINAL FANTASY XIV, the listed PC requirements call for 140 GB or more and distinguish a hard disk at minimum from an SSD at recommended. These details illustrate why checking only the storage-capacity number can miss a requirement.

Decide what to do if your PC falls short

First identify the exact failed line. Do not buy an upgrade based only on a broad “gaming PC” label or the game’s overall recommended tier.

  1. Write down the unmet requirement. Note whether it is the OS, CPU, GPU or VRAM, RAM, storage capacity or speed, DirectX, or internet connection.
  2. Confirm the comparison. Check the full component model and the publisher’s current requirement page, including footnotes and any performance-target notes.
  3. Check upgrade compatibility before spending. For a storage upgrade, verify the drive interface, form factor, and whether the motherboard has an available compatible slot. A faster or larger drive cannot fix a CPU, GPU, operating-system, RAM, or network shortfall.
  4. Recheck the target experience. If you meet only minimum requirements, decide whether the publisher’s stated minimum target—if one is given—matches your expectations for resolution, preset, and frame rate.

Verify the result before downloading or buying

Requirements pages are not permanent specifications. Reopen the publisher’s page before purchase or installation, confirm that the correct PC edition and platform are selected, and check the game’s current availability. This matters especially for live-service titles: New World: Aeternum’s Steam listing reports a January 15, 2026 delisting and a planned January 31, 2027 offline date, so it should not be treated as a game that new Steam customers can necessarily buy or that will remain playable indefinitely.
