First check whether the problem is a drop in rendered frame rate or a network delay: a dipping FPS counter and choppy image point toward local performance, while rubber-banding, delayed server responses, failed hits, or disconnects point toward connectivity. An online game can suffer from both at once. Measure what happens during the hitch, then try reversible fixes that match the evidence before considering hardware changes.
Tell frame-rate stutter from network lag
Stuttering is not a diagnosis by itself. Watch the image and your character’s behavior when the problem occurs. If the picture visibly becomes choppy and the FPS counter falls, investigate rendering or system load. If the image remains smooth but your character teleports or rubber-bands, actions reach the server late, hits fail to register, or you disconnect, investigate the connection or game server. These symptoms can overlap.
Lost Ark Support describes common connectivity symptoms in its lag and connectivity guidance. Nexon America Support also notes that server-side lag is possible and recommends checking ping and packet loss during the issue in its Connection and Performance Assessment. Nexon summarizes the relationship plainly: “Higher ping is worse, the higher it is, the more lag you’ll feel.”
Measure what changes during the hitch
Use the game’s FPS display or a trusted hardware monitor you already have. Record readings while the problem is happening, rather than relying on how the game felt afterward. Nexon’s assessment recommends looking at FPS alongside CPU, RAM, and GPU use. Also note CPU and GPU temperatures, and compare them with the component manufacturer’s guidance; there is no single temperature threshold that applies to every PC.

- Does FPS fall at the same time as CPU or GPU load, temperature, or memory use changes?
- Does the hitch occur mainly in crowded areas, after entering a new zone, or during combat?
- For network-shaped symptoms, do ping or packet-loss readings change at the same time?
- Is a download, update, or other high-bandwidth activity running?
A busy or nearly full component is a clue about what to investigate, not proof that it needs replacement. Nexon also cautions that a game server may not respond to the final ping hop. Intermediate network readings can still help show whether trouble appears before the game server.
Match the symptom to the next check

Try reversible local performance fixes
Change one thing at a time and retest in a similar situation, such as the same crowded area or type of combat. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped. Official support advice for New World, Lost Ark, and Arma Reforger includes the following checks, but controls and menu labels vary by game and PC.

- Reduce demanding graphics settings. If your PC is below the game’s recommended requirements or measurements point to a rendering bottleneck, lower settings and retest. Bohemia Interactive specifically calls out view distance and shadows for Arma Reforger; treat those as examples, not universal settings to blame. Check your own game’s support page and graphics menu.
- Close unnecessary programs and pause downloads or updates. Background applications can compete for system resources, while downloads use bandwidth. New World Support also notes that drive-writing tasks can affect performance.
- Try another display mode. If the game offers them, compare full-screen with windowed or borderless mode. New World Support lists switching display mode as a troubleshooting test.
- Check power settings. On Windows, make sure a lower-performance power setting is not limiting the PC. New World and Lost Ark support both identify power mode as a possible performance factor. Laptops may have additional manufacturer controls.
- Check for graphics-driver updates. Use the current driver offered by your GPU vendor. If you recently changed driver settings, Lost Ark Support also suggests restoring driver defaults as a troubleshooting step.
- Verify game files if your launcher or platform supports it. New World and Lost Ark include file verification among their recommended performance checks; the exact route depends on the game and launcher.
- Investigate heat when measurements point to it. Compare recorded temperatures with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not dismantle a laptop or change voltage settings based only on a general report of stuttering.
These checks are tests, not guaranteed FPS upgrades. Their official support pages do not publish a universal expected performance gain for any one step.
Check the game’s guidance before troubleshooting shaders
Shader preparation can cause stuttering in some games, but it is not a universal explanation for MMO hitches. Square Enix Support Center documents a specific example for Star Ocean: The Divine Force: shader-cache creation after initial play can cause stuttering, and that game has an in-game “Compile Shader” option. Square Enix says compilation may take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications. That duration and menu option apply to its documented game, not to MMORPGs generally. Check your own title’s official support page before waiting, clearing a cache, or changing driver settings.

When Ethernet is worth testing
A wired connection is useful as a diagnostic test when weak Wi-Fi signal or wireless interference may be contributing to rubber-banding, delayed actions, or other network symptoms. Lost Ark Support recommends trying a wired connection in that context. Ethernet does not, by itself, raise rendered FPS, so it is not a general fix for a low FPS counter.

If the issue persists after relevant local and network checks, a game-specific bug or server-side problem remains possible. Check the current support page and known-issues channel for your game. When contacting support, include what happened during the hitch: whether FPS dipped, which CPU/GPU and memory readings changed, whether ping or packet loss changed, where in the game it occurred, and which reversible checks you tried. Share logs only as requested by the support team.
