To get smoother play, establish a repeatable baseline, change one setting at a time, and retest in the same area or encounter. Start with resolution or supported upscaling if the GPU is struggling; in crowded fights, look for a separate control for other players’ effects.
Why one preset cannot work for every MMORPG
Two games can respond differently to the same setting, and a quiet town may run differently from a crowded raid. Your display resolution, the game’s engine, hardware and the workload in a particular scene all affect performance. The sources cited here do not establish a universal FPS target, a universal ranking of settings by performance cost, or a guaranteed gain from any adjustment.
Use a repeatable test in the game you actually play. Evaluate both frame-rate consistency and image quality, and compare like with like rather than judging a change from a single moment.
A practical tuning workflow
-
Record a baseline
Note the game, location or encounter, resolution and graphics preset, along with how frame rate behaves. If the game has an official benchmark, use it to make comparisons. The FINAL FANTASY XIV benchmark displays system specifications and a frame-rate graph. A benchmark is useful for comparing runs, but it cannot promise the same performance in every live encounter.

Check the game and PC setup
Compare your PC with the requirements for the specific game, especially if it is near the minimum. Update the graphics driver and verify that the game is using the intended GPU. On laptops and other systems with both integrated and dedicated graphics, the game may be using the integrated GPU instead. ArenaNet explains how to check GPU selection for Guild Wars 2 and recommends requirements and driver checks in its performance troubleshooting guide.
-
Test resolution or supported upscaling
If GPU rendering is the limiting factor, try a lower resolution or a render-scaling or upscaling option the game supports. Check image clarity as well as performance. These features are not available in every MMORPG, and some require compatible graphics hardware.

For example, the Windows graphics options listed in FINAL FANTASY XIV Patch 7.0 notes include AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS on supported cards, 3D resolution scaling and dynamic resolution. Treat those as FFXIV-specific options, not controls every game will have.
-
Lower costly visual options one at a time
Where the game exposes them, test options such as shadows, ambient occlusion and reflections individually. FFXIV’s documented graphics options include shadow quality and GTAO ambient occlusion. In an ArenaNet explanation of Guild Wars 2’s DirectX 11 renderer, reflections are used to illustrate how costs can vary by scene: in a city scene, reflections render the world again. That example does not establish a universal cost ranking for settings across games or hardware.

Reduce effects in crowded combat, if the game allows it
Some games provide a separate setting for other characters’ battle effects. In FFXIV, the available choices include “Show All,” “Show Limited,” “Enemy PC” and “Show None” for character groups. Square Enix says these controls can help performance or make combat activity easier to see. The trade-off is reduced visibility of other players’ effects; choose a setting that keeps the fight readable for you. See Square Enix’s battle-effect guidance.
-
Retest and keep the trade-off you prefer
After each adjustment, repeat the same test and compare frame-rate behavior and image quality with your baseline. Keep a change only if its trade-off suits you; do not assume a particular setting will produce a specific FPS gain without testing it on your system.

Choose changes that address the actual bottleneck
When comparing settings, ask whether a change improves consistency in the scene where you have trouble, whether the visual compromise is acceptable, and whether it affects the work your PC is struggling with. A resolution reduction or upscaling setting concerns rendering; it may not address a workload dominated by the game or CPU. The cited official guidance does not provide a universal cross-game CPU-versus-GPU diagnosis method, so avoid treating one setting as a guaranteed fix for every kind of slowdown.
If performance is poor and your PC is close to a game’s minimum requirements, ArenaNet recommends lowering in-game settings and checking the component that limits performance in its Guild Wars 2 troubleshooting guidance. The same practical caution applies across games: confirm the cause and check that title’s requirements before deciding you need new hardware.

Use game-specific examples as examples, not universal prescriptions
FFXIV’s scaling and battle-effect controls, and Guild Wars 2’s renderer discussion, show the kinds of options an MMORPG may offer. They do not imply that another game has the same menu labels or features. Menus can also change between patches: the FFXIV graphics options cited above come from Patch 7.0, while ArenaNet’s renderer article describes a DirectX 11 beta-era example from 2021. Check the current settings and patch notes for the game you play before following a title-specific path.
ArenaNet’s article also quotes Guild Wars 2 Senior Engine Programmer James Fulop: “The higher the FPS, the smoother the action looks, until you hit the physical limit of your display.” That is a general explanation, not a promised FPS target or measured result for your game. The article’s example used an Intel i7-6700 CPU and NVIDIA 1080 GPU in Lion’s Arch with the “Best Appearance” preset; those details describe that example, not a current hardware recommendation.
