Best Steam Settings for Downloading Large RPGs

Leave Steam’s bandwidth limit unrestricted for maximum throughput; use queue controls, update scheduling, gameplay settings, and alternate Library drives to fit your needs.

For the fastest Steam download your connection can provide, leave the download bandwidth limit unrestricted. Add a cap only when you need to reserve bandwidth for other people or for online play. Then use Steam’s Download Manager to control queue order, schedule routine automatic updates, and check the Library drive if a large RPG will not install.

Set bandwidth limits to match how you use your connection

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and inspect the bandwidth limit. If you want Steam to use as much available bandwidth as possible, leave the limit unrestricted. A limit is a ceiling, not a speed boost: use one when you would rather keep bandwidth available for other household users or activities.

Check the rate units before entering a number. Steam’s displayed limit follows the client’s bytes-versus-bits display preference, so the same number can represent different rates depending on that setting. See Steam Support’s Setting Client Rates.

Choose when updates run and what downloads first

Use Steam’s Download Manager to monitor progress and reorder the queue when one game should download before another. For routine automatic updates, choose a schedule that suits your local time and connection availability. Scheduling applies to automatic updates; it does not mean every manually started download will wait for the selected window.

Decide whether downloads should continue while you play

Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game by default. To keep a download running during gameplay, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads. If downloading interferes with an online game or shared connection, limit the bandwidth or let the download wait until you finish playing. Steam explains the default behavior and setting in Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

Try another download region only when there is a problem

Steam normally detects your region and selects content servers. If a download is unusually slow or failing, try a different nearby region in the Downloads settings and compare the result. A local content server can be slow, overloaded, or affected by hardware failure, but changing regions is a troubleshooting test—not a guaranteed speed improvement. Steam lists this and other download fixes in Steam Support’s download troubleshooting guidance.

Make sure the Library drive has enough space

Bandwidth settings cannot solve a lack of installation space. Steam can use Library folders on alternate drives, and you can move an installed game between Library folders without downloading it again. Open Steam’s storage or Library management controls to add or manage a folder and move the game. This helps when the drive holding your current Library is full; extra storage does not increase your network download speed. See Managing Steam Libraries.

Recover from a stalled or failed download

If a download or installation is not progressing, work through Steam’s troubleshooting steps rather than changing several settings at once:

  1. Restart Steam, then restart your computer if the problem remains.
  2. Try a different nearby download region and check whether the download behaves differently.
  3. Clear Steam’s download cache from Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. This does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward. See Clear download cache.
  4. Repair the affected Library folder using Steam’s storage or Library management controls.
  5. If the game is installed but behaving incorrectly, verify its local files where applicable.

Steam’s download troubleshooting guidance covers these measures. Use library repair or file verification for the relevant Library or installed game; neither is a substitute for making room when the destination drive is full.
