Steam’s rating is a useful shortlist signal, not a verdict on whether you will enjoy an RPG. Start with the overall score, then check recent reviews, the language breakdown when available, and detailed praise and criticism that match the way you play.
What does a Steam Review Score tell you?
Steam groups games into Review Score categories based on the percentage of positive reviews. That gives you a quick read on broad player sentiment, but it does not tell you what reviewers liked or disliked—or whether their reasons matter to you. A favorable score might reflect writing, combat, performance, or value; the written reviews help you identify which.
The size of the review pool also matters. Steam’s 2025 announcement says an overall score needs 10 reviews. A small pool can make the headline category less informative than a larger set of opinions, so treat it as a starting point rather than a precise ranking. Steam’s explanation of review scores describes the system.
Check the score and reviews for the game’s current state
An RPG can change after release through patches, new content, or changes in support. Steam says prominent reviews are selected from recently written reviews to help reflect a game’s current state. For eligible games, the store page may also show a recent score when enough recent reviews exist. Steam’s historic explanation defines the recent window as the preceding 30 days; availability and display rules can change, so check the game’s current store page. Steam’s review-score guidance explains the feature.
#1 Best Overall
Steam’s current guidance says a recent score may appear after a game has been released for more than 45 days, provided it has enough recent reviews. Use the overall score to understand longer-term reception and recent reviews to see whether the experience appears to have shifted.
Check whether the rating reflects your language
Steam may calculate and display a language-specific score alongside the overall score. In its August 18, 2025 announcement, Steam said this feature applies when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews in at least one language. If the feature is available, the score shown is associated with your primary language; use “See language breakdown” to compare sentiment across languages.
Language and region can affect a player’s experience. Steam points to translation issues, cultural references, and poor network connections as possible reasons scores can differ. If you play in a language other than the one represented by the score you first see, the language breakdown may give you a more relevant picture. Steam’s 2025 announcement describes the thresholds and feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read reviews for reasons, not just reactions
Read several detailed positive and negative reviews rather than relying on the headline category or a memorable one-liner. Look for specific observations about what you care about: narrative, combat, exploration, progression, bugs, performance, translation, connectivity, or price and value. Steam describes useful reviews as ones that help prospective players judge whether they are likely to enjoy a game, and specifically identifies factors such as bugs and value.
Steam’s August 14, 2024 helpfulness-system update says low-information reviews—including one-word posts, ASCII art, and primarily playful memes—may be sorted behind other reviews. This changes how some reviews are ordered, not how the game’s Review Score is generated. Review ordering can help you find useful detail faster, but you still need to decide whether a reviewer’s priorities match yours. Steam’s announcement explains the change.
A review does not necessarily mean its author bought the game on Steam. Steam says users can review a product after registering an external key or playing a free game, and it displays playtime with the review. Consider that context alongside what the person actually says; it is not, by itself, evidence that a review is unreliable. Steam’s user-review explainer describes how reviews work.

A practical way to compare RPGs on Steam
- Shortlist with the overall score. Use the category to identify games with broadly favorable reception, not to declare one RPG better than another.
- Check recent feedback. Where Steam shows a recent score, read recent reviews too—especially for games with a long Early Access or post-launch history.
- Confirm the language context. Check whether the displayed score is specific to your primary language. If Steam offers “See language breakdown,” inspect it when translation or regional experience matters to you.
- Match review details to your priorities. Compare comments about the elements you care about, such as story, combat, exploration, progression, performance, connectivity, or value.
- Weigh the relevance of each complaint. A server issue may matter less if you intend to play offline; translation criticism may matter a great deal if you play in that language. Treat reviews as evidence about a particular experience, not a universal verdict.
- Be cautious with thin pools and borderline categories. A score based on few reviews gives you less to work with, and language-specific scores have higher display thresholds than overall scores.
