A revenge-saga RPG is defined by what drives its story; a strategy RPG is defined by how its play asks you to make tactical decisions. Those are different kinds of labels, not opposing genres: a game can be both. To tell what a particular RPG offers, look separately at its plot motivation, battle decisions, and how player choices shape the campaign.
Revenge is a story motive; strategy is a way of playing
“Revenge-saga RPG” is best read as a description of narrative emphasis, not a standardized industry genre. It suggests that seeking retribution—or confronting the people responsible for a past wrong—is central to the story. “Strategy RPG,” by contrast, points to play built around tactical choices in combat, such as positioning characters or coordinating attacks.
That distinction matters because a revenge plot does not tell you whether battles are grid-based, turn-based, or action-based. Nor does the strategy label tell you whether a story is about revenge, political conflict, or something else. Publisher labels and game descriptions establish how those publishers present their own titles, rather than a universal genre rule.
How the two emphases compare
| Question | Revenge-saga emphasis | Strategy RPG emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| What motivates play? | Uncovering the cause of a wrong, pursuing those responsible, or deciding how to confront them. | Overcoming battles and navigating a larger conflict through tactical choices. |
| What decisions stand out? | Which objectives to pursue and, in some games, how choices shape the sequence or experience of the story. | How to position characters and use formations, combos, and battle actions. |
| What does the label not establish? | It does not specify combat mechanics or tactical depth. | It does not specify whether the story includes revenge or political drama. |
These are useful comparison points, not rules every game must follow. A story with revenge can still offer varied objectives and consequential choices, while a strategy RPG can put as much emphasis on its narrative as on combat.

Romancing SaGa 2 shows how the labels can overlap
Square Enix labels Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven “RPG, Strategy.” Its description casts the player as the Emperor of Avalon, facing the Seven Heroes. It also says that choices and the order in which objectives are tackled shape the narrative experience. The title therefore pairs a revenge-centered premise with the publisher’s strategy label, rather than fitting one side of a strict either-or distinction.
The game’s official SaGa franchise description points to party formation and combo attacks as sources of tactical depth. This helps illustrate what “strategy” can mean in practice: decisions about how a party is assembled and how its actions work together, alongside the campaign’s story and objectives.

Strategy RPGs can emphasize different tactical decisions
There is no single battle formula implied by the strategy RPG label. In its Triangle Strategy developer insights, Nintendo highlights character placement before battle. Square Enix’s SaGa description, meanwhile, calls attention to formation and combos. Both are tactical considerations, but they are not identical systems.
Story emphasis varies too. Triangle Strategy is presented through choices and conflict, while Romancing SaGa 2 connects the player’s objectives and their order to the narrative experience. Strategy RPG should not be taken to mean a story-light game, just as a revenge premise should not be taken to mean a linear one.

A revenge mechanic does not determine a game’s genre
Disgaea 5 makes the distinction especially clear. NIS America calls it a Strategy RPG and describes a Revenge Gauge that accumulates when allied units take damage or are defeated. The mechanic brings “revenge” into battle, but the publisher’s genre label remains Strategy RPG. A revenge feature, theme, or subtitle by itself is not enough to classify how a game plays.
The reverse is also true: a title that evokes revenge does not necessarily indicate strategy gameplay. PlatinumGames labels Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance “Action.” Its title’s revenge connotation is not a substitute for checking the publisher’s genre description or the game’s actual combat structure.
