How to Fix Common Steam Download and Launch Problems

Match the Steam error to the right fix: troubleshoot downloads, server and library issues, missing files, and games that will not launch.

Start with the exact symptom: a slow download, a library that says a game is uninstalled, and a launch error need different fixes. Record the affected game and the full error message, then restart Steam and your computer. From there, use the matching steps below and avoid deleting game folders or broadly disabling security software as an early fix.

If a game will not download, update, or install

For the message “An error occurred while updating [game title]” or a stalled installation, work through Steam’s general Update & Installation Issues guidance. Start with the reversible client and library checks before considering reinstalling anything.

  1. Exit and reopen Steam, then restart the computer.
  2. Clear Steam’s download cache: open Steam > Settings > Downloads and select Clear Download Cache. Steam says this does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in again, so make sure you know your login details. See Steam’s cache instructions.
  3. In Steam’s storage or library settings, repair the library folder used by the game.
  4. Verify the game’s installed files using the steps in the section below.
  5. Try a different download region, preferably one relatively near you.

If those checks fail, see whether the library folder is writable, whether security software is blocking Steam, and whether installing to another drive changes the result. Do not delete the game folder as a first step. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content; its reinstall guidance says installing Steam again to the existing location can preserve installed games. Consult the official installation troubleshooting guide before taking that step.

If downloads are slow or Steam says servers are unavailable

Steam’s “Steam Servers Are Currently Unavailable or Too Busy” message can reflect a regional download-server problem. Change the download region in Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose a relatively nearby alternative, and test again. Steam does not identify one region as best for everyone; servers can be slow, overloaded, or affected by hardware problems. Its server troubleshooting guide explains the region check.

If switching regions does not help, check your local connection and restart network hardware such as your router. Steam notes that network equipment can become slow or malfunction after extended operation. Also check whether firewall or security software is interfering, following Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance. These checks do not establish whether Steam has a current outage; the server message alone is not proof of one.

If Steam says an installed game is uninstalled or starts downloading it again

First check whether the game’s existing files are still present and whether Steam is looking in the library folder that contains them. If the files are in another library, add that folder through Steam’s Storage Manager so Steam can find the installation. Follow Steam’s instructions for installed games appearing as uninstalled rather than deleting the folder or starting over.

Steam does not recommend external drives for game libraries because disconnections and performance issues can disrupt access. It also warns that forcing a shutdown while Steam is writing to disk can corrupt library information. If the game is on an external drive, confirm that the drive is connected and available before asking Steam to locate the library.

If a game is missing files, crashes, or will not launch

Verify the affected game’s files before reinstalling it. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks whether the files are installed correctly; the process may take several minutes. Its verification guide advises against running it during other system-intensive work, such as a virus scan or defragmentation, or verifying several games at once.

One or more files may fail verification without indicating a broader problem. Steam says this is normal for most games because the files can be local configuration files that should not be replaced.

If the game stays on “Preparing to Launch”

When Steam displays “Preparing to Launch” and the game never opens, the cause can depend on the game and the computer’s hardware and software configuration. Follow Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance:

  • Update your operating system and drivers.
  • Verify the game’s files using the procedure above.
  • Temporarily disable non-essential software that may interfere with startup.
  • Check that the game supports your operating system or platform and that your computer meets its system requirements.

If the game lacks native Linux support, Proton does not guarantee that it will run. Steam directs players to the game-specific Proton discussions for compatibility information. If the general checks do not resolve a title-specific failure, contact the game developer.

If Steam says “Failed to start game (app already running)”

This error can appear after a silent crash or when a game process did not close correctly. On Windows, open Task Manager, find the lingering process for the affected game, and end that process. If you cannot find or close it, restart the computer. Then try launching again; if the error persists, verify the game files.

If you use the Steam beta client, switch to the regular client and test there. Steam’s “app already running” guide covers these checks.

If Steam reports “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”

Steam identifies antivirus quarantine or another program blocking a game file as common causes; an incomplete download or corrupted file can also trigger the error. Check your security software’s quarantine. Only allow a file if you have confirmed it belongs to the legitimate game installation; do not broadly turn off antivirus protection.

Restart Steam and verify the game files. If the error remains, contact Steam Support and provide the diagnostic information it requests.

If Steam says “This game is currently unavailable”

Restart Steam, update your drivers, verify the game files, and check your network configuration if the message continues. Some games run prerequisite installers on first launch—for example, for DirectX or Visual C++. If such an installer was canceled or blocked, the game may not start. Because the required component and installation steps vary by game, use that game’s instructions or contact its developer rather than running a generic installer. See Steam’s “This game is currently unavailable” guide.

Choose the next check by the symptom

What you see Start with
Download or update error Restart Steam and the computer, clear the download cache, repair the library folder, then try another nearby download region.
Slow download or unavailable-server message Change the download region; if that does not help, check the connection, network hardware, firewall, and security software.
Game shown as uninstalled, or download begins again Check the existing library folder and add the correct library through Steam’s Storage Manager.
Missing content, crash, or launch failure Verify the affected game’s files.
“App already running” Close the lingering game process on Windows or restart the computer.
“Missing Executable” Check security quarantine carefully, then restart and verify files.
“Preparing to Launch” or “This game is currently unavailable” Check platform support, system requirements, OS and drivers, interfering software, and game-specific prerequisites.

If an issue affects one game, a file, prerequisite, compatibility, or developer-specific problem is more relevant to investigate; if several games are affected, start with Steam, the library, network, or security configuration. This is a practical way to choose a first check, not a universal diagnosis: Steam does not publish one diagnostic tree that identifies every cause across games and systems.

When to contact support

Contact Steam Support for persistent Steam-wide installation, library, or client problems, and follow any request for diagnostic details. For a crash or compatibility failure limited to one game, contact that game’s developer after checking the general launch steps. Steam’s guides for installation and updating and launch failures describe the general procedures; they cannot diagnose every game, computer, network, or security-software configuration.
