Choose the games first, then decide whether you want a fixed, preloaded library or support for original cartridges, and finally match the system to handheld or TV play. There is no single best retro console for everyone: the right choice depends on the specific games you want to play.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down the titles—or original console library—you care about before comparing hardware. A device’s game count does not tell you whether it includes your favorites. Check the actual preloaded list or confirm that the exact cartridge format is supported.
“Retro console” can mean a mini system with a fixed set of games, a handheld that reads original cartridges, or original or modernized hardware for one platform. These options offer different ways to access games; general retro branding does not mean every classic game will work.

Fixed, preloaded library: Nintendo Classic Edition systems
The NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition are TV-connected, plug-and-play systems with games already installed. Nintendo says both work with standard HDMI inputs. Additional games cannot be downloaded, and the systems do not support external storage, so check the included titles before buying. Nintendo Support explains how the Classic Edition systems work and confirms their library cannot be expanded with downloads or external storage.

| System | Included games and controllers | TV and power details |
|---|---|---|
| NES Classic Edition | Nintendo’s UK product page lists 30 pre-installed games and one controller. | HDMI output at 60 Hz; HDMI and USB power cables are listed in the box. A USB AC adapter is required but not included. Nintendo lists suspend-point saves and CRT, 4:3, and Pixel Perfect display modes. Nintendo UK product page |
| Super NES Classic Edition | Nintendo lists 21 pre-installed games and two wired controllers. The included games are original US 60 Hz releases. | HDMI and USB power cables are included; the USB AC adapter is not. Nintendo lists up to four suspend points per game and rewind up to five minutes from the last save. Nintendo product information |
The figures above describe Nintendo product pages, which do not show publication years for those counts. The Super NES Classic Edition’s additional controller support covers separately sold Wii Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro accessories. Although Nintendo says these systems are not region-locked, that does not make them cartridge players: their games come preloaded. Nintendo’s region-lock support entry.
Original handheld cartridges: Analogue Pocket
Analogue says Pocket works out of the box with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The company gives an aggregate figure of more than 2,780 games across those cartridge libraries; that is a manufacturer figure, not an independently audited count. Check the specific cartridge you own rather than treating the total as a guarantee that every title or accessory is compatible. Analogue Pocket product page.

Other supported cartridge families require separate adapters: Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx. Pocket is a handheld; Analogue’s separate Dock connects it to an HDTV and provides 1080p HDMI output. Do not assume the Dock or adapters are included with the handheld.
Analogue lists a 3.5-inch, 1600 × 1440 display, a 4300 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, USB-C charging, and a microSD slot. Its estimated six-to-ten-hour playtime is a manufacturer estimate; Analogue notes that six hours is a rough estimate at default brightness. These are specifications and claims from the manufacturer, not independently tested performance. The same product page listed Pocket at $239.99 when accessed in 2026; that is a vendor-page price, not a region-adjusted street-price comparison, and taxes, shipping, stock, and price may change. One platform or a different modern system
If your priority is a single platform, original hardware or a modernized system may be a better fit than a broad collection device. Verify the exact model, supported games and regions, video output, controllers, cables, and hardware condition before buying. For a current-market example rather than an exhaustive survey, GamesRadar+’s 2026 buying guide discusses options including Super Pocket handhelds, Genesis/Mega Drive hardware, and Analogue 3D. Treat its product judgments as that publication’s editorial assessments, not official specifications or hands-on testing by VGSources. GamesRadar+ retro console buying guide.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Game-library fit | Are your specific games included, or does the system support their exact cartridge format? |
| How the library works | Is it fixed and preloaded, cartridge-based, or dependent on separately sold adapters? Can games be added through an official supported method? |
| Where you will play | Is the system handheld, TV-focused, or both? For TV play, identify the required dock, cables, and output. |
| What comes in the box | Check for controllers, HDMI and USB cables, and a power adapter. For multiplayer, confirm whether another controller is needed. |
| Compatibility | Check the exact system, cartridge, region, and accessories. A broad “retro” claim does not establish universal compatibility. |
| Provenance | Consider whether the hardware and games are authentic or licensed, and whether the seller, packaging, and condition are credible. |
| Total cost and availability | Account for the console, required accessories, and games. Check local stock, new or used condition, and seller terms; older mini consoles may not be routinely available new. |
Check the TV setup and extra costs
For a mini console, confirm your TV or monitor has a standard HDMI input and check the box contents rather than assuming every power component is supplied. Nintendo’s NES Classic page, for example, lists HDMI and USB power cables but says the USB AC adapter is required and not included. With Analogue Pocket, TV play requires the separately listed Dock.

Nintendo says licensed gaming accessories and peripherals display the Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal, which it describes as evidence that they were evaluated and licensed for Nintendo systems.
