If your retro game feels slow to respond on a modern TV, start by turning on Game Mode for the console’s HDMI input. Then check automatic low-latency switching, turn off optional picture processing the TV manual says is unnecessary for gameplay, and test the rest of the video chain one change at a time. Consider a dedicated scaler only if the TV is mishandling the console’s older video signal; it cannot fix delay caused by the game, console, or controller.
Why is there a delay when I play games on my TV?
A modern TV may process video and audio from a console before displaying or playing them. That processing can add delay. Nintendo describes this as a possible cause of control lag and audio desynchronization in Switch TV Mode, and notes that Game Mode or a similar option may shorten the TV’s internal processing time: Nintendo Support.
With a retro console, the signal may also pass through a converter or scaler before reaching the TV. The apparent delay can therefore come from somewhere in the full chain—not necessarily the television alone. The effect depends on the console and its output, any intervening device, the TV input and settings, and the game itself.
Try these TV settings first
Enable Game Mode on the console’s input
Open the picture settings for the HDMI input the console actually uses and select Game Mode, or the TV’s equivalent low-latency picture mode. The setting may be saved separately for each input, so check the one connected to the console. Nintendo and Roku both describe Game Mode as a way to reduce processing-related lag. Menu names and paths vary by TV; consult its manual if you cannot find the option. Roku Support

Check ALLM, if the TV supports it
Some Roku TV models support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which can switch the TV into Game Mode when a game starts. Confirm that your particular model supports ALLM and that the feature is enabled; availability is model-dependent. Roku’s guidance does not mean every TV will switch automatically.
Review optional picture processing
Look in the TV manual for optional picture-processing features that are unnecessary for gameplay, then try disabling them. Settings differ across models, so there is no universal list of switches to turn off. Change one setting at a time and test the same game and input after each change; that makes it easier to identify whether a setting matters. Retro Games Support

- Easy Plug and play setup.
- Compatible with any game system utilizing a 9 pin sega style connection.
- Excellent playability and response time.
- Sturdy construction and design
- Four Button design improves playability over original style game controllers.
Check the complete signal path
If Game Mode and the relevant picture settings do not help, check each link between console and screen. Confirm that the TV is on the intended input, and that the console’s cable and any converter or scaler support the console’s output. If possible, test without an intermediate device or compare another input, changing only one part of the setup at a time.
- Console: Check the selected output mode and whether the symptom occurs in more than one game.
- Converter or scaler: If one is present, check its signal compatibility and settings.
- TV input: Make sure the console is connected to the input whose picture mode you changed.
- TV processing: Keep Game Mode enabled while testing other relevant settings.
This isolation helps distinguish display-chain delay from a problem intrinsic to the game, console, or controller. A display setting or scaler cannot correct lag originating in those sources.

When a retro gaming scaler may help
A dedicated retro gaming video scaler can be worth considering when a modern TV does not handle an older console’s video signal well. A scaler processes and converts the signal for display, but compatibility and latency depend on the console, signal type, scaler mode and firmware, and television. It is not a universal fix, and feature descriptions alone do not establish end-to-end latency for every console-to-TV setup.
RetroTINK’s experimental 5X firmware documentation describes a 1080p “Min-Lag” mode that “should achieve line-doubler latency (~1 ms).” That is the manufacturer’s qualified description of a scaler mode—not an independent measurement of the complete path from a particular console through a TV. Before choosing hardware, check whether it supports your console’s output and cable, handles the relevant progressive or interlaced signal, and offers the output resolution and image treatment you want. Look for latency evidence that applies to the specific setup, rather than assuming that any upscaler reduces delay. A scaler is most relevant when signal compatibility or TV handling is the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Settings versus scaler hardware
| Option | Best reason to try it | Compatibility and trade-offs | Latency evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV Game Mode and picture settings | Reduce delay introduced by TV processing. | Uses the TV’s existing input and settings; controls vary by model. Check the manual for optional processing features. | Nintendo and Roku identify Game Mode as a way to reduce processing-related lag; neither establishes a result for every TV and retro console combination. |
| Dedicated retro gaming scaler | Help when the TV does not handle the console’s legacy signal well. | Must support the console’s signal and cable; compare interlaced or progressive handling, output resolution, and image treatment. | RetroTINK’s experimental 5X firmware describes a 1080p Min-Lag mode as one that “should achieve line-doubler latency (~1 ms)”; this is not an end-to-end result for every setup. |
The TV-setting changes are the sensible first step because they do not require adding signal-conversion hardware. A scaler is a conditional option when compatibility or signal handling remains the issue; it should not be bought on the assumption that it will remove all perceived delay.
