If you want to decide what to do next rather than follow a fixed route, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for terrain-led wandering, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for quests and side paths, or Minecraft for a world without a prescribed goal. Elden Ring suits players who want discovery alongside recurring combat. These games offer different kinds of freedom: an open world does not automatically mean a slow, quiet, or directionless experience.
Which open-world game best fits your pace?
| If you want… | Try… | What you can choose | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| To pick a direction and explore the terrain | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Survey the landscape, choose destinations, and set your own route. | There is still an overarching quest; freedom of route does not mean a lack of objectives. |
| A story framework with room to wander | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Follow the main quest or leave it for optional places, dungeons, and quests. | Its many quests offer more direction than a sandbox where you invent your own activities. |
| To make your own activities and goals | Minecraft | Explore, gather resources, craft, and survive without a set goal. | You provide more of the structure and decide what counts as progress. |
| Exploration with combat as a regular part of the appeal | Elden Ring | Explore connected landscapes and dungeons, with options to summon help. | The official description establishes adversaries and combat, not a low-pressure experience. |
What kind of freedom do you want?
Breath of the Wild: choose a destination, then find your way
Nintendo describes climbing towers and mountain peaks to look for destinations, surveying the land, and setting a route into the wilderness. That makes Breath of the Wild a natural fit if you want to spot something interesting and decide how to reach it, rather than have every next step dictated by a quest list. Nintendo’s feature page frames this as choosing your own path through the wilderness.

The distinction is freedom to choose a route, not a world without direction: Nintendo also describes the game as a quest to protect Hyrule. Consider it if you want an overarching purpose while retaining room to wander and make detours.
Skyrim: follow the story, or take a side road
Skyrim gives wandering a framework of quests and role-play. Bethesda says players can pursue the main quest or leave the path to explore a winding catacomb and build a legend at their own pace. Its overview supports a choice between advancing the central story and seeing what lies off the route.
#1 Best Overall
That quest-rich structure can be useful if you want options without having to invent every objective yourself. If you are considering the Anniversary Edition, Bethesda describes it as including the core game, the three official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, plus Creation Club content. Exact contents can depend on platform and territory, so check the current regional listing before buying; Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page is a starting point.
Minecraft: make the goal yourself
Mojang’s official overview says Minecraft has no set goal. In Survival mode, it lists exploration, gathering resources, crafting, fighting monsters, and gaining experience among the activities available to players.

- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
This is the clearest choice if you like setting your own projects and pace. The tradeoff is that the game supplies less prescribed direction than a story-led RPG: you decide what to build, collect, explore, or attempt next.
Elden Ring: discover a mysterious world through combat
Bandai Namco describes Elden Ring as a world of connected landscapes and complex dungeons, and its official site notes that players can summon spirits or other players for help while exploring. That supports a recommendation for players who want to uncover a fantasy setting and welcome combat as part of the journey.

- Be Mad Max - Become the iconic post-apocalyptic warrior, crafting and upgrading Max's equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques. Gamers must form alliances as they work towards the goal of building their "Magnum opus."
- Immersive savage Wasteland - Explore the gritty, dynamic world while braving the treacherous landscapes, hostile weather patterns and deadly marauders.
- survive the open-world landscape - Staying alive isn't easy. Players clash with deadly factions and gangs through scores of dangerous side-missions and quests in the dynamic open-world full of exploration.
- intense vehicular combat - Engage in dynamic inter-vehicular combat, taking down enemy vehicles with a range of powerful weapons. Car combat is entirely physics-based, so no two battles are ever the Same.
- build the ultimate survival machine - Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate vehicle-the Magnum Opus-choosing from different car chassis and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armour and engines to survive another day
The cited description does not establish that the game is relaxing or low-pressure, nor does it compare difficulty with the other games here. If you want to avoid combat, its advertised focus on adversaries makes it a less certain fit than the other options.
How to choose without mistaking “open world” for “no direction”
- Choose Breath of the Wild if freedom means deciding what landscape or landmark to pursue and charting your own route.
- Choose Skyrim if you want optional wandering and role-play, but also appreciate quests that give you things to do.
- Choose Minecraft if you enjoy creating your own projects and do not need a central story to set your priorities.
- Choose Elden Ring if discovering places between combat encounters sounds appealing, and combat is not something you are trying to minimize.
These are feature-based fits, not guarantees of how every player will experience pacing. The publishers’ descriptions establish the games’ advertised structures, but do not provide a uniform comparison of difficulty, accessibility, or how often exploration is interrupted.
