How to Explore an Open-World Game Without Losing the Main Story

Use the quest journal as your anchor, explore in manageable detours, and check the next story step before wandering farther.

Use the quest journal as your return point: check the main objective and any stated prerequisites, then explore one nearby area or follow a relevant clue before checking your next story step again. This keeps the main thread easy to resume without treating every map marker as equally important—or turning off guidance that helps you.

Use a short loop to balance story and exploration

Open-world games differ in how they track quests, reveal the map, and signal points of interest. A repeatable check-in works across many designs, but it is a practical approach rather than a universal mechanic or a tested formula.

  1. Pause somewhere safe and open the quest journal. Separate the main quest from side activities, then read the current objective. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 109 recommends clear objective descriptions that players can review, and gives distinct main- and side-quest categories as examples: Xbox Accessibility Guideline 109.
  2. Note what the objective actually requires. Look for an explicit destination, item, count, or prerequisite. If the game warns that a choice is consequential, read the warning before continuing; do not assume an objective has an unstated deadline.
  3. Track the main quest or enable a hint if useful. If the game offers a tracked objective, waypoint, path aid, or guided option, use the level of direction that suits you. These aids are not a failure of exploration; they are a way to keep your place.
  4. Choose a bounded detour. Visit one nearby landmark or clue that interests you, or explore along the route to the story objective. The idea is to keep the next main step recoverable, not to clear every icon in sight.
  5. Check the journal or map after the detour. Confirm whether the objective changed, a prerequisite was met, or a new clue appeared. Then choose another nearby activity or return to the story route.

Let the game’s guidance style set your approach

Maps and markers are tools, not promises that every activity has the same importance. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends features such as reviewable task history, map filters, waypoints or reminders, and visible prerequisite progress. In practice, those features can reduce the effort of remembering what to do next; use only the ones that help you.

Some games combine direct tracking with more open-ended discovery. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, exploration reveals map detail, viewpoints uncover nearby interests, and players can pursue clue-based tracking or choose a Guided option. Game Director Charles described the intent as, “We didn’t want to hold the player’s hand too much with icons and markers,” while also saying, “We wanted to craft an open world where information was key and would become a form of reward.” Ubisoft’s overview of exploration in Assassin’s Creed Shadows explains the balance between clues and guidance.

If you enjoy inference, follow dialogue, environmental details, and clues before reaching for a waypoint. If you lose track of your next step, consult the journal or turn on optional guidance. You can also reduce map clutter with filters or a focused quest view when the game supports them. Neither approach is right for every player or every game.

Don’t assume side content works like the main quest

A marker can represent a self-contained encounter rather than a chapter of the central narrative. Ubisoft describes Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as pairing an overarching main storyline with regional stories, while its World Events are designed to leave more investigation to the player. Narrative Director Darby McDevitt said of that open-ended design, “The more you allow players to make decisions for themselves, the more on board they will get.” Ubisoft’s explanation of World Events in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla describes that approach.

So, weigh a side activity by its description, location, and your interest—not by assuming every icon is equally urgent or narratively central. A detour on the way to a relevant clue may fit neatly into your loop; a distant activity can wait until you decide it is worth the travel.

Use landmarks and fast travel when the game supports them

Travel systems change the cost of exploration, but their rules are game-specific. The Atelier Ryza 3 manual says discovered landmarks reveal surrounding map areas and enable fast travel. That is a documented feature of that game, not a guarantee that landmarks or fast travel work the same way elsewhere. Atelier Ryza 3 manual: Map.

When deciding whether to detour, consider whether the point of interest is nearby, lies along your current route, or requires a substantial journey. Check the game’s own map or manual for what discovery, viewpoints, or landmarks actually unlock.

Check missability before a major story commitment

There is no universal rule that side quests remain available after every story milestone. The guidance and game examples here establish ways to track objectives and illustrate differing exploration systems; they do not establish whether a particular game’s activities expire or become inaccessible.

The Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition (PS4)
  • Includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine expansions, 16 DLC's which offer a massive 50 hours of additional storytelling as well as new features and new areas that expand the explorable world by over a third!
  • Affords access to all additional content released so far, including weapons, armor, side quests, game modes and new GWENT cards!
  • Features all technical and visual updates as well as a new user interface completely redesigned on the basis of feedback from members of the Witcher Community.

Before a major commitment, read any in-game warning and verify missable-content rules for the specific game and edition using a reliable game-specific source. If the game provides no warning, do not treat that silence alone as proof that nothing can be missed.

Keep clues outside the game only if you need to

If your game does not preserve useful clues or next steps, a simple personal checklist—or an optional quest-tracking notebook—can help you record the objective and where you left off. It is an aid, not required gear, and no particular notebook is established as compatible with any game.
