Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a Cygames training-and-racing simulation: you coach characters inspired by racehorses as they work toward victory in fictional competitions. Its English version launched in June 2025, and a record Steam concurrent-player peak helps explain the attention it attracted. “Taking over” is best read as a description of that surge—not a claim that it currently dominates Steam or Twitch.
What is Umamusume: Pretty Derby?
In Cygames’ game, racehorses are reimagined as characters who train to compete in the Twinkle Series. You take the trainer role, develop a character, enter races, and follow her story and results. Steam describes races with as many as 18 competitors, followed by character stories, live commentary, and post-race concerts. Cygames frames the title as a simulation game within a broader franchise of anime, manga, music, and games. Cygames’ official overview and the Steam store listing describe those elements.
Why did it trend on Steam and Twitch?
The clearest measure of its Steam surge is a historical concurrent-player record: SteamDB recorded 87,453 players at once on July 16, 2025. That is a peak at a particular moment, not a count of everyone who has played the game.
SteamDB’s page, retrieved October 5, 2026, showed 5,355 Steam players and a 7,923-player 24-hour peak. Its Twitch section showed 208 viewers and a 764-viewer 24-hour peak, alongside a historical Twitch peak of 81,594. These are changing tracker snapshots, not official Cygames statistics or evidence that the game still leads either platform. SteamDB’s charts provide the dated and historical figures.

There is also a larger regional milestone, but it measures something different: Cygames reported more than 30 million downloads across Asia by June 26, 2025, since the Japanese version’s 2021 release. That cumulative download figure is neither an active-player count nor a global total.
Is it a horse-racing game, a life sim, or a gacha game?
It includes horse-racing-style competition, but the official framing is a sports-life simulation centered on training characters and experiencing their stories. Races are the payoff for the preparation and character progression, rather than the whole game.

It also has chance-based in-game purchases: Steam discloses them on its listing. So “gacha” may describe an aspect of its purchase system, but it does not replace the game’s broader training, racing, and story structure. Steam’s listing identifies the game as single-player with online PvP and in-app purchases.

Cygames announced the English version on June 26, 2025, and lists availability on iOS, Android, Steam for PC, and Google Play Games for PC. The supported language listed is English. Cygames calls the game free to play with optional in-app purchases. Release dates differ by source and platform: Steam displays June 24, 2025, SteamDB records a June 25 UTC release timestamp, and Cygames announced the English service on June 26. Those dates refer to distinct listings or events, not one universal launch date.

Steam PC requirements
The minimum requirements displayed on Steam are Windows 11, 8 GB RAM, 11 GB available storage, DirectX 11, and either an Intel Core i3-4360 or AMD A8-7650K processor with a GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Radeon R7 250X graphics card. Store requirements can change, so check the live Steam listing for current compatibility details.
Playing on a handheld
SteamDB marks the game Playable on Steam Deck and reports successful operation on SteamOS, while noting that some in-game text is small. That can matter on a handheld screen; a Deck is an optional way to play, not a requirement.
