Start with the competition you might enter, not a kit listing: check that event’s current rules, available weight classes and safety requirements, then decide whether a kit or a self-designed robot better fits your goals. A kit can make a first build more approachable, but it does not guarantee event compatibility or remove the need for safe testing.
Find an event and read its rules first
Combat-robot rules and class offerings vary by organizer. Look for a nearby event or club, then confirm which rule set it uses before choosing a design or buying parts. The SPARC resource hub links to construction specifications, tournament procedures, match rules, judging guidance and arena-construction best practices. Those materials are useful references, but the event’s adopted rules are the ones that matter.
For example, NHRL describes its Open classes as 3 lb, 12 lb and 30 lb. Those are NHRL classes, not a standard that every local competition follows. See NHRL’s builder resources for its own class information and beginner resources.
Choose a kit or design your own
A kit can reduce the amount of design and fabrication needed to get a first robot assembled. It can suit someone who wants to learn assembly and basic operation before taking on a full design. Building from a self-designed concept gives you more responsibility for those choices and can be a better fit if learning the whole design process is your main goal. Neither route overrides the target event’s rules.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Supporting Original Design】BIGTREETECH DeathRacer Kit designed by Sam Prentice. Compliant with the competition regulations, the product quality is up to standard, and there is no need to worry about quality issues affecting the competition
- 【Carbon Fiber Bludger Shaft & Chassis Brace】Included in the kit are the carbon fiber bludger shaft and chassis brace. Compared to the steel rods in the original BOM, CF is much lighter yet just as strong, reducing the load on the servos, delivering faster swings, a lighter frame, and enhanced maneuverability for agile control
- 【Flysky FS-I6 Remote Control】Provides a stable and multi-functional control experience. NOTE: The product packaging DOES NOT include power batteries and remote control batteries, but these batteries are necessary to drive the Deathracer Kit. If you have any questions, please turn to us for help
- 【Ultimate Power and Precision】Aluminum Casing Standard Servo 270°25KG, Sturdy and powerful, this servo provides your DeathRacer with the precision and strength needed to knock off your opponent robot's head; 2 Channel Brushed ESC: Supports hybrid and independent dual-channel modes, Compatible with both trigger and board controls. Note: Includes an ESC cooling fan to ensure sustained, high-intensity performance
- 【Relentless Power and Durability】550 Brushed Motor 21T: Powerful and built to last, delivers consistent strength for peak performance in every race; Industrial-Grade Planetary Gearbox: 5.18:1 - Amplify torque with a robust, durable gearbox built for high-intensity challenges
NHRL points beginners to its Havoc Academy Crash Course, which it identifies as a starter kit and online course. NHRL’s Combat Robotics Starter’s Guide also notes that kits may cost more than a self-designed robot and may not win tournaments. Treat a kit as a learning route, not a shortcut to competitive results.
A named example: FingerTech Viper
A published Make/Repeat Robotics guide to combat robot kits names the FingerTech Viper as a first antweight kit and describes a bent sheet-metal frame, two drive motors with foam wheels and a polycarbonate wedge. That is an example, not a current check of price, stock or kit contents, and it does not establish that the robot complies with any particular event’s rules.

Compare the routes against your goals
| Question | Kit | Self-designed build |
|---|---|---|
| How much design work do you want? | Can reduce initial design and fabrication work; the exact amount depends on the kit. | You take on more design decisions and fabrication planning. |
| What do you want to learn first? | Can help you focus on assembly and getting a first robot running. | Offers a direct route into the broader design process. |
| Will it suit your event? | Must still meet the selected event’s class and rules. | Must meet the same event-specific requirements. |
| What will it cost or what can you reuse? | Current price and reuse value are not established by the cited sources. | Current build cost and reuse value are not established by the cited sources. |
Design for the class and inspection
Once you have chosen an event and class, design around that organizer’s rules—including weight, construction, weapon and safety requirements. At NHRL, a robot must pass inspection before its first fight. Its 2026 rules list checks including weight, functionality, applicable design requirements, radio failsafes and weapon locks or covers; weapon modules intended for the event must also be inspected. Read the NHRL Open Rules for 2026 if you plan to enter NHRL, and allow time to address inspection issues.
Weapon requirements are not universal. NHRL’s 2026 judging appendix requires an active weapon capable of harming an opponent. That requirement describes NHRL; do not assume a passive wedge is accepted or prohibited at another competition without checking its rules.

Build safe handling and testing into the plan
Safety begins during assembly and continues through charging, testing and competition. NHRL’s 2026 rules confine weapon and drive testing to a test box, with a stated wheels-up exception for robots with a separate weapon switch; they also prohibit driving robots around pits or the venue outside the test box. The same rules require attended charging, balance leads for lithium-chemistry batteries, and safety glasses and other appropriate personal protective equipment when using power tools. Follow your chosen event’s current instructions and the equipment makers’ directions.
NHRL’s beginner guide advises testing far from people and animals and using suitable safety gear. BattleBots likewise warns that building, testing and fighting robots is dangerous, and recommends getting help when a builder lacks the necessary knowledge. Its general guide to building a combat robot encourages newcomers to start small at local competitions rather than treating a television-scale robot as a normal first project. Use controlled test areas and ask experienced builders for help; do not improvise a weapon test in a home or public space.

A practical first-build sequence
- Find a local event or club. Identify the organizer, its active weight classes and the rule set it adopts.
- Read the current rules. Check construction, weapon, safety and inspection requirements before selecting hardware.
- Choose your learning route. Pick a kit if reducing initial design work is useful, or self-design if you want to take on that process. Verify that either approach can meet the event’s rules.
- Plan for inspection and safe testing. Account for required safety equipment, test facilities and any inspection changes in your schedule.
- Ask the organizer or experienced builders when a rule is unclear. Do not rely on another event’s rules—or a kit description—to settle a local requirement.
