To finish “Fiddling with Fulgurating Fulminations” in The Outer Worlds 2, recalibrate five lightning towers across Praetor and return to Exemplar Simon at the Grounding Station. The northeast tower needs a replacement part, and the southwest tower requires the Rift Anomaly Modulator to reach its control room.
How to start the quest
After you gain access to the Grounding Station, speak with Exemplar Simon in its tower to learn about the lightning-tower task. You can also start the quest by calibrating any of the five towers before speaking to him, according to Game8’s quest guide. The quest journal and in-game map are the best references for navigation; the route descriptions below identify broad regions and landmarks, not exact coordinates.

Northeast tower: find the replacement part
From the Landing Pad, follow the road north toward the Tomb of the Matriarch. The terminal indicates that the tower is missing a component. Head to the nearby Scrapper camp, clear it, and collect the Grounding Tower Replacement Part. Return to the tower, install the part, and use the terminal to recalibrate it. Northwest tower: cross the broken bridge
Travel to the northwestern side of Praetor, southwest of Central Control. The tower stands across a broken bridge. Verachnids are reported around the approach, so clear the area before using the tower terminal to recalibrate it, as detailed by Neoseeker.

Central tower: enter the control room
Look south of the large central gate, in the hills around a conflict involving Protectorate soldiers and Raptidons. If the control-room door blocks you, Gamexplore’s route describes climbing onto the roof and dropping through an opening. Once inside, use the terminal to recalibrate the tower.
Southwest tower: use the Rift Anomaly route
Plan this tower after completing “An Instrument to Unfold Space & Time,” which provides the equipment needed for the route. At the control-room gate, use the Rift Anomaly Modulator with two nearby Rift Anomalies to create climbable boxes and a path over the gate. Enter the control room and recalibrate the terminal. Southeast tower: climb out of the tunnel
Leave the Grounding Station heading southeast and enter the eastern tunnel. Raptidons are inside; clear them, then climb the rocks at the far end to reach the tower. Use the control-room terminal to recalibrate it. This approach is covered in Gamexplore’s walkthrough.
Return to Simon for the reward
Once all five towers are recalibrated, return to Exemplar Simon at the Grounding Station to turn in the quest. Game8’s 2025 guide lists the reward as 1,863 XP, 15 Storm Grenades, and the Storm Grenade recipe.

If Simon has no turn-in option
Obsidian’s Patch 1.1.0.0 announcement says it “Resolved an issue where players didn’t have the option to turn in Fiddling with Fulgurating Fulminations quest with Exemplar Simon.” If you have completed the five calibrations but cannot turn in the quest, check the game’s current patch and the official Obsidian announcement for version context.
