Monthly Games are a fresh selection you add to your library each month; you can play them while your PS Plus membership is active. The Game Catalog is a rotating library of games you can browse and play with an Extra or Premium membership, but individual titles can leave. Extra and Premium include both benefits; Essential includes Monthly Games but not the Game Catalog.

What “add to your library” means for Monthly Games

Monthly Games are not purchases that become yours outright. You select the monthly titles and add them to your game library; an active PS Plus membership is still required to download and play them. PlayStation Support describes them as “games available for you to download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership.” The monthly selection changes, so add titles you want while they are available.

What happens when a Game Catalog game leaves?

The Game Catalog is a subscription library, not a permanent claim list. Sony notes that some games have an end date and will be removed. Once a title leaves, it is no longer available through the catalog, even if you had downloaded it. Check the game’s listing or PlayStation announcements for its availability rather than assuming a catalog title will remain.

Extra and Premium members receive Monthly Games as well as Game Catalog access; upgrading is not necessary just to get the monthly selection. Premium’s Classics Catalog, trials, and streaming are separate added benefits, not part of the Game Catalog. Sony’s PS Plus support page outlines the tier benefits. Most games in the libraries can be downloaded, while streaming availability and selection have restrictions.

Which benefit matters when choosing a tier?

Choose Essential if Monthly Games and core membership benefits are enough for you.
Consider Extra if you also want an on-demand library of currently available games.
Consider Premium if you want Extra’s benefits plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, and eligible cloud streaming.

Whether the higher tier is worthwhile depends on the games available in your region and the titles you actually want to play. Plan terms, prices, and catalogs can change; consult your local PlayStation plan page before subscribing.
