VulkanRT is the Windows runtime and loader component that lets compatible games and applications use Vulkan, a graphics and compute API maintained by Khronos. GPU drivers commonly install it, so its presence does not mean you separately installed a developer toolkit. It is not inherently malicious; most people should leave it installed because removing it can stop Vulkan-using games or apps from using Vulkan until the component is restored.
What VulkanRT does
Vulkan is a cross-vendor graphics and compute API. On Windows, applications that use Vulkan rely on the Vulkan loader, named vulkan-1.dll. The loader connects an application to the relevant graphics-driver implementation; Khronos says the installer also writes registry values used to locate those implementations. Applications that do not use Vulkan do not load the Vulkan loader. It is a runtime component, not a graphics card or a general-purpose Windows service. Khronos explains the Windows loader and runtime; NVIDIA also describes Vulkan as a graphics and compute API.
Vulkan.org describes Vulkan 1.4 as bringing proven features into the core specification. That is the API’s version, not evidence of which runtime version is installed on any particular PC. Vulkan.org
Why it is on your PC
Graphics drivers from GPU hardware vendors commonly install Vulkan runtime files as part of their normal installation. You may therefore see “Vulkan Run Time Libraries” in Windows’ installed-apps list without ever having installed the LunarG SDK. The display name alone does not identify exactly which installer added the copy on your computer. Khronos describes driver-bundled installations.

Is VulkanRT safe?
The legitimate Vulkan runtime is not a virus. In a 2017 article, Khronos co-authors Jeff Juliano of NVIDIA and Erika Johnson of LunarG explained that the runtime installer does not install user or kernel services; it installs the loader DLL and related registry values. The article also says the loader and relevant registry locations are protected, and that the loader does not run with elevated privileges. Read the Khronos security explanation.
Those statements concern the documented runtime, not every file that happens to have the same name. A file called vulkan-1.dll in an unexpected location is not authenticated by its filename alone.

Can you uninstall Vulkan Run Time Libraries?
You can choose to uninstall a listed program using Windows’ installed-apps interface, but there is no single uninstall path established for every runtime or graphics-driver package. The practical trade-off is straightforward: removing the loader can prevent Vulkan-using games or applications from using Vulkan until a compatible runtime is available again. That does not mean ordinary Windows desktop graphics generally require Vulkan.
- Keep it if you play games or use software that may offer Vulkan. Leaving the entry in place avoids a possible compatibility problem.
- Uninstall it only if you have a reason to remove it and accept that Vulkan applications may need the runtime restored.
The available sources do not establish a universal amount of disk space saved or guarantee that every graphics-driver update reinstalls VulkanRT.

If a Vulkan game stops working after removal
- Use the graphics-card vendor’s official support channel to restore or update the graphics driver or runtime. The right package and procedure depend on your GPU, Windows version, and driver package.
- Try the affected game or application again once the compatible runtime is available.
- Do not download a replacement DLL from an arbitrary file-download site.
Exact vendor-specific recovery steps and current installer behavior are not established here. Historical answers in a Microsoft Q&A thread suggested that older applications might depend on older runtime copies, but that is anecdotal advice, not current Microsoft support guidance; it does not show that every older copy is necessary or that removing one is always safe.
