Mario Kart World is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo says races can include up to 24 drivers. A July 2026 Nintendo Life roster guide lists 50 playable characters, while its September 2026 outfit guide counts 127 looks including defaults. Those detailed totals come from Nintendo Life—not an official Nintendo roster or costume catalog—so the distinction between racers and outfit variants matters.
How many characters and outfits are in Mario Kart World?
Nintendo Life’s roster guide, dated July 1, 2026, reports 50 playable racers: 24 main Mario-series characters and 26 NPC or enemy characters. It says 18 racers must be unlocked. Its September 17, 2026 outfit guide reports 127 outfits in total, counting each character’s default appearance.
These are separate counts. An outfit changes a character’s appearance; it is not another unique racer, even if a costume appears as a separate entry on the character-selection screen. Nintendo’s official materials confirm that outfits can be unlocked, but do not enumerate every racer or outfit in the sources cited here.

Which racers need to be unlocked?
Nintendo Life reports 18 unlockable racers. Its guide identifies seven cup-unlock characters and their associated cups:
| Character | Reported unlock |
|---|---|
| Daisy | Flower Cup |
| Rosalina | Star Cup |
| Donkey Kong | Mushroom Cup |
| Bowser Jr. | Lightning Cup |
| King Boo | Leaf Cup |
| Birdo | Banana Cup |
| Lakitu | Shell Cup |
The guide also describes unlocking several NPC racers through transformations involving Kamek or, in version 1.3.0, a UFO in Free Roam. The particular unlock conditions can depend on the game version; consult the guide’s current instructions for the exact steps rather than assuming every unlock works the same way.

How outfits work and how to unlock them
Nintendo describes Dash Food as a to-go order that gives a speed boost and can sometimes unlock an outfit for later use. After unlocking one, select it from that character’s entry on the character-selection screen. Nintendo’s driver page also says that more drivers and outfits unlock as you play.
Nintendo Life’s outfit guide counts 127 appearances, including defaults, and provides character-by-character outfit names with food examples. It explicitly warns that its food-and-location list is not fully comprehensive, so it should not be treated as a complete, guaranteed map of every Dash Food source. The 127 figure and individual outfit details are Nintendo Life’s reporting, not totals or a catalog stated by Nintendo.

Officially confirmed details and source distinction
Nintendo confirms the game’s Switch 2 exclusivity, June 5, 2025 release, races with up to 24 drivers, and the Dash Food outfit-unlock mechanic. The complete 50-character roster and the 127-outfit total cited above come from Nintendo Life guides published in 2026. Nintendo’s official textual pages cited here do not list every racer or costume, so those detailed inventories should be attributed to the secondary guides.
