Garry’s Mod said on April 24, 2024, that Nintendo-related items had been removed from its Steam Workshop at Nintendo’s request. Two days later, creator Garry Newman said he had been assured the takedowns were verified as legitimate. The statements describe an ongoing review—not a confirmed deletion of 20 years’ worth of content.
What Garry’s Mod said about the takedowns
In an April 24, 2024 announcement on Steam, the Garry’s Mod team said: “Some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo related workshop items have recently been taken down. This is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo.”

The team said it had to respect Nintendo’s decision about the use of its content and would “take down as much as we can.” It also asked uploaders to remove Nintendo-related uploads and not reupload them.
What Garry Newman confirmed—and what he didn’t
On April 26, Newman, Garry’s Mod creator and Facepunch Studios founder, followed up in a statement reported by Nintendo Life: “I have been assured that the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit, so this will now continue as planned. Sorry.”

“20 years of uploads” was a backlog, not a removal count
The team described the work as ongoing: “This is an ongoing process, as we have 20 years of uploads to go through.” That refers to the historical backlog the team said it needed to review, not a count of items removed or a claim that every upload would be deleted.
