It is a 16-core, 32-thread Zen 4 CPU with 128 MB of L3 cache, and ASUS announced the ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D as the first laptop to use it. ASUS reported an average 20% gaming advantage over the non-X3D Ryzen 9 7945HX in a specific set of tests—but that manufacturer-reported result is not a promise of the same gain in every game or laptop.
What the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is
The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is a laptop processor, not a desktop CPU intended as a socketed upgrade. AMD identifies it as a Zen 4 processor, formerly codenamed Dragon Range, with 16 cores and 32 threads. Its defining feature is 128 MB of L3 cache, enabled by AMD 3D V-Cache technology. AMD’s product specifications list a July 27, 2023 launch date; AMD’s announcement video identifies it as the first mobile processor with 3D V-Cache.

Which laptop launched with the 7945HX3D?
ASUS announced the ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D on July 28, 2023, calling it the world’s first laptop with the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. The announced configuration paired the processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU and a QHD 240 Hz display. See ASUS’s launch announcement for the model details.
#1 Best Overall
- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Gaming and Content Creation Processor
- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
The processor’s Radeon 610M integrated graphics are not the same as the discrete RTX 4090 used in that gaming laptop configuration. For gaming, the GPU, cooling design, power limits, display resolution, and selected performance mode all help determine what a complete laptop can deliver. The 7945HX3D is not a standalone drop-in laptop upgrade; buyers should compare complete systems and their regional configurations.
How much faster is it in games?
ASUS reported that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D averaged 20% faster than the Ryzen 9 7945HX across 12 selected games. ASUS attributes the testing to AMD and dates it June 29, 2023. Treat the figure as a vendor-reported average for that test set, not an independent benchmark result or a guaranteed uplift for other games.

What the 20% comparison tested
According to the ASUS test footnote, AMD compared ASUS Strix Scar 17 systems with the 7945HX3D or 7945HX, each configured with 32 GB (2 × 16 GB) DDR5, a 1 TB SSD, GeForce RTX 4090 graphics, and Windows 11 64-bit. Tests used Turbo mode, native 1080p resolution, and high detail settings. The games were League of Legends, Total War: Warhammer 3, Strange Brigade, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Borderlands 3, The Riftbreaker, Final Fantasy XIV, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, F1 2021, Dirt 5, DOTA 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. ASUS cautions that system configurations and performance may vary.
Because this was a specific 1080p comparison using top-tier discrete graphics and a selected game list, it does not establish how the processor will perform in every title, at QHD or another resolution, or in a different laptop. ASUS describes the rationale for the technology this way: “For situations where increasing CPU frequency simply doesn’t show significant performance gains, 3D V-Cache technology holds the potential to unlock extra compute power.” That is a vendor description of potential, not evidence that every game benefits equally.

What to compare when considering a 7945HX3D laptop
- GPU and its power configuration: the graphics hardware can have a major effect on game performance, so do not treat CPU comparisons as a complete measure of a laptop.
- Cooling and sustained limits: a processor’s listed clock and TDP do not by themselves describe how a particular system performs over a long gaming session.
- Display and resolution: the SCAR 17 X3D was announced with a QHD 240 Hz screen, while ASUS’s quoted CPU comparison used native 1080p.
- Memory, storage, and operating mode: compare the actual laptop configuration and the settings used in any benchmark you rely on.
- Game-specific results: check whether a benchmark includes the games you play and uses settings comparable to your intended use.
- Regional price and availability: check the current listing for the exact configuration in your region; the launch specifications do not establish present stock or pricing.
