The exchange acknowledged vent-sniffing as a meme and asked people to refrain. That is a reported support reply—not a public Valve health advisory or a finding that the vent air is toxic.
What Steam Support said about inhaling Steam Deck vent air
Contemporary reporting reproduced a Steam Support response to a user’s question in December 2023. Tom’s Hardware quoted the reply as follows: “As with all electronics, it is generally not recommended you inhale the exhaust fumes on your device. While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device’s vent fumes should be avoided. We understand that it may be a meme, but please refrain from this behavior for the safety of your health.” (Tom’s Hardware; PCGamesN)
The reply draws a distinction: using the device normally was described as having no safety concern, while deliberately breathing directly from its vent was discouraged. The wording does not establish that the exhaust is harmless to inhale, nor does it report a demonstrated injury or particular toxic exposure. The reviewed coverage does not name the support representative or present the reply as a public Valve policy page.
How vent-sniffing became a Steam Deck meme
Steam Deck owners discussed the device’s vent smell in community posts, including one question preserved by PCGamesN: “does anyone else sniff their deck’s fan/exhaust?” Contemporary coverage described the smell as a new, plasticky or electronic scent, but those descriptions are subjective impressions—not chemical analysis.

The joke and discussion date back to the original Steam Deck’s launch period, according to contemporary reporting. But posts and anecdotes cannot show how many people actually inhaled vent air, whether they ignored the support reply, or whether the practice remains widespread today. The headline’s “won’t stop” framing is best read as a playful nod to the meme, not a measured account of gamers’ behavior.

What is known—and not known—about the smell
The reporting reviewed for this story does not identify the substances responsible for the odor or measure their concentration. It also provides no exposure-duration data, device-specific toxicology assessment, or health-study statistic that would quantify risk from directly inhaling the vent air. Colorful comparisons people use to describe the smell are not evidence of its chemical makeup.
Valve’s press kit lists both Steam Deck OLED and LCD versions, but the reporting does not establish a dependable difference in vent smell or emissions between them. There is no basis here to call one version safer or more hazardous to sniff. (Valve’s Steam Deck press kit)
