How to tell whether a Switch game works on Switch Lite
Check the specific game’s supported play modes rather than relying on its being a Nintendo Switch release. Nintendo’s guide explains that games supporting handheld mode can be played on Switch Lite: Nintendo’s compatible-games guidance.
- Physical game: Look on the back of the game-card box for the handheld mode icon.
- Digital game: Check the game’s “Supported Play Modes” section in its Nintendo eShop listing.
- Nintendo game details: Nintendo’s game pages also show play-mode information.
The handheld icon is a useful first check, but it does not guarantee that every feature or play style works with Switch Lite’s built-in controls. Review the game’s accessory and mode details too. Nintendo’s compatibility guide and game listings provide those checks.
When a game needs separate Joy-Con
Some Switch games support handheld mode but include features designed for detached Joy-Con, such as motion controls, HD rumble or the IR camera. Those features may require separately connected Joy-Con; a game can be playable on Lite while some modes or functions are unavailable with the built-in controls. Nintendo describes this limitation in its Switch Lite game compatibility guide.

- Nintendo Labo: Some physical Toy-Con builds are designed to hold a standard Switch, not Switch Lite. Nintendo specifically identifies certain Variety Kit builds and the Vehicle Kit screen stand; this is a fit and intended-use issue, not proof that every Labo activity is impossible.
These are examples, not a complete list of affected games. Check current play-mode and accessory information for the title you want.
What accessories and multiplayer options are available?
Switch Lite can connect wirelessly to Joy-Con controllers, which can provide supported features that the built-in controls do not, including motion controls, HD rumble or IR-camera functions. Nintendo says detached Joy-Con must be charged with a Nintendo Switch system or Joy-Con Charging Grip. If you want tabletop play, Switch Lite also needs a stand because it has no built-in stand; Nintendo lists its adjustable charging stand and licensed stands as options. Compatible games can support local wireless play between Switch-family consoles. Nintendo’s Australian guidance says up to eight consoles can connect for local multiplayer. Online multiplayer is available in compatible games with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The available multiplayer modes and required accessories vary by game: Nintendo’s local wireless guidance.

No. Switch Lite has no TV mode and is not compatible with the Switch dock for TV output. Connecting a separate controller does not add TV output; it only changes how you control a game. Nintendo distinguishes Lite from the TV-capable models in its console comparison guide.

Quick checklist before you buy
- Find the game’s handheld mode icon on its physical box, or check “Supported Play Modes” on its eShop listing.
- Look for notes about detached Joy-Con, motion controls, rumble, IR-camera features or other accessories if you want to use those modes.
- For multiplayer, check whether the game needs extra controllers, additional consoles, a stand or an online subscription.
- If you need to play on a television, choose a Switch model with TV mode; Switch Lite cannot provide it.
