If it opens but stalls during its first start, let shader preloading finish at the main menu. These are troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed fixes; work through the steps below and note where the launch fails.
1. Close software that may conflict with Steam
Activision recommends disabling programs that may interfere with Steam. Close optional overlays, monitoring utilities, and other background apps as a first check; those are examples of software to test, not apps Activision specifically identifies as causes. Then try launching the game again.
2. Verify Black Ops 6’s Steam files
Activision specifically recommends verifying the integrity of the game files for Steam. In your Steam Library, open Black Ops 6’s properties and use the installed-files option to verify the files. Steam’s exact labels can change. Wait for the check to finish, then try launching the game again. See Activision’s Black Ops 6 PC troubleshooting guidance.
3. Let shader preloading finish
If the game starts but appears to hang or perform poorly on first boot, leave it at the main menu while shader preloading completes. Activision says leaving the main menu stops preloading and can affect performance. This applies to first-boot preparation; it is not a guaranteed remedy if the game never opens.

4. Check antivirus and background startup programs
Add a targeted antivirus exception
If the earlier checks do not help, Activision recommends adding the entire Black Ops 6 game folder to your antivirus exception list. Use your security software’s own settings and make sure you select the game folder, rather than turning off protection wholesale.
Try a clean boot
Activision also recommends a clean boot with only the minimum programs running if problems persist. This can help you test whether another background program is involved. If the game launches in that state, restore programs methodically to identify a possible conflict; do not assume the clean boot itself is a permanent fix.

5. Review Windows security and tuning settings
Re-enable ASLR if you disabled it
Activision advises re-enabling ASLR if it has been disabled. ASLR is a Windows security feature; change only this setting if you previously turned it off, and avoid changing unrelated security options as a launch workaround.
Temporarily disable overclocking or tuning tools
Activision recommends disabling overclocking or tuning software that may conflict with the game. If you use such tools, return the affected hardware to its standard settings for a test launch.

Update device-control or peripheral software drivers
Activision advises updating drivers for device-control or peripheral software. Its PC troubleshooting page lists NVIDIA 566.03, AMD 25.5.1, and Intel 32.0.101.6790 as recommended versions, as shown on the page accessed in 2026. Those are the versions listed there, not a claim that they remain the latest available. Check the current Activision troubleshooting page and the relevant vendor’s release information before choosing a driver; do not roll back or install a driver solely because one of these numbers appears on Activision’s page.

Before escalating, note whether Steam does not start the game at all, the game opens and then crashes, or it reaches the menu but stalls during shader preloading. Record any exact error message as well. If the problem continues, Activision offers a Call of Duty PC Crash Report route to provide information that may help identify and investigate PC crashes. Submitting a report does not guarantee a particular outcome or response time.

When reinstalling, use the Steam installation path
Reinstalling is a later option if file verification and the other checks fail. Black Ops 6 is a standalone title, and Activision’s setup information discusses reinstalling digital versions through the Call of Duty experience. For a Steam copy, keep the reinstall tied to the Steam installation rather than following instructions for a console or another PC storefront.
