Master is a separate, tougher difficulty that uses the same restricted save system. Both require a new campaign. The update also revised A-Life and enemy behavior, added anomalies, changed stamina and energy-drink effects, and introduced Immersive Mode. Update 1.7 is historical: GSC’s official archive lists Update 2.0 and patches through 2.0.6, dated September 18, 2026.
What are Expedition Mode and Immersive Mode?
They are different features. Expedition Mode changes how campaign progress can be saved: you can save by exiting a Hub and at selected main-quest moments. It lets you choose a difficulty other than Master while using that restricted save system. Immersive Mode is a presentation option that can hide the HUD and apply a field-of-view preset; it does not define the campaign’s difficulty or save rules.

GSC’s showcase introducing the update is dated November 17, 2025, while its support patch-notes page is timestamped November 18, 2025 at 13:15. Those are the dates on the respective official pages, not a single universal rollout time. GSC’s Expedition Update Showcase and Update 1.7 Expedition patch notes describe the changes.
Master Difficulty vs. Expedition Mode
| Option | Difficulty | Save system | Campaign requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master Difficulty | Master’s heightened combat and survival challenge | Restricted saves: exit a Hub or reach selected main-quest moments | New campaign required |
| Expedition Mode | Player can select a different difficulty | Uses the restricted save system | New campaign required |
Master makes NPCs and mutants more dangerous, anomalies more punishing, and radiation, hunger, sleepiness, and other effects more painful. Resources become scarce, items less durable, and trader economics less favorable. GSC describes these changes qualitatively; it does not give numerical damage, loot, or economy values in the showcase.

#1 Best Overall
Expedition is therefore not another name for Master. It brings Master’s save rule to a campaign played on a different selected difficulty. Neither option can be switched on or off in an existing campaign’s settings: both require starting a new campaign, as GSC states in its showcase.
How A-Life and combat changed
GSC says Update 1.7 improves A-Life so factions may expand or lose control of territory. NPCs and mutants can contest points of interest, checkpoints, and locations—but not Hubs. Mutants also defend their lairs and territory. Players may join those clashes or avoid them.
Rank #2
- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground—over 20 players on Xbox One.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
- Enemies detect players less effectively in tall grass and reeds, and shoot less accurately through bushes.
- NPCs and mutants may retreat when an engagement looks unfavorable.
- They flank more actively and choose engagement distances suited to their weapons.
These are developer-described behavior changes, not independently measured results. Their practical impact may vary with the encounter and location.
New anomalies in Update 1.7
Rising water drops
One new effect sends drops of water from puddles up into the sky. GSC calls it visually strange and “pretty harmless,” but does not give it a formal name in the showcase.

Steam anomaly
The Steam anomaly can warm the player, but it is dangerously hot. GSC recommends testing it with a bolt before approaching.
Movement, equipment, and presentation changes
- Stamina: The system was reworked, with a second sprint state added.
- Energy drinks: Frequent use can cause tremors and shortness of breath, making it harder to aim.
- Controller aiming: GSC says aiming with a controller was improved.
- Artifact radiation: An artifact-radiation bar was added.
- Inventory and equipment: Inventory presentation and equipment stats were revised.
- Weather: A light-rain weather scenario was added.
- Stashes: SD cards with coupons were added.
- Immersive Mode: Players can hide the HUD and select a field-of-view preset.
Optimization, fixes, and mod troubleshooting
The patch notes list optimization work across foliage, buildings, world streaming, lighting, character assets, cloth, animation, and other systems. GSC also says Update 1.7 fixed over 90 crashes. That is a crash count, not a frame-rate benchmark: the notes do not establish a percentage improvement or a particular performance gain.
The update also includes quest and stability fixes. GSC published follow-up Patch 1.7.1 on December 10, 2025, addressing further issues including artifact-spawn and crash problems. Its Update 1.7 notes advise disabling mods if performance or stability problems appear after updating and direct players to the official support center for troubleshooting.
Is Update 1.7 the latest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 version?
No. The official patch archive lists Update 2.0, dated August 20, 2026, and subsequent patches through 2.0.6, dated September 18, 2026. The original 1.7 save rules should not automatically be assumed to describe every later version: GSC later documented in “Stories Untold” that manual saves can be enabled in settings for Master or a difficulty using Expedition Mode, once and permanently for that playthrough. That later change postdates 1.7.
