If performance or stability is still poor, check whether your installed Sober version exposes renderer or graphics-optimization settings and test them one at a time. There is no universally best renderer or guaranteed FPS gain: results depend on the game, GPU, driver and Sober release.
Before tuning: know what Sober is
Sober is an unofficial, experimental way to run Roblox on Linux, not a Roblox-supported client. Its developers describe it as “a passion project rather than production-grade code” and warn that it “may be discontinued at any time.” The project’s official website explains its status. Expect behavior and available settings to vary between releases.
1. Update Sober first
Check for an update to the Sober package installed from Flathub before spending time on configuration. When accessed on October 5, 2026, the Flathub listing showed version 1.8.0 and an update notice from three days earlier. Its release notes mentioned fixes for long-standing performance issues and freezes, a rendering bug on certain GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes. Those fixes do not guarantee an improvement on every system; the version and notes can change.
2. Lower Roblox’s graphics quality
This is the best-supported first adjustment: Roblox documents that reducing graphics quality can improve performance. In an experience:

- Open the in-game menu by clicking the Roblox logo or pressing Esc.
- Select Settings.
- Set Graphics Mode to Manual.
- Move the Graphics Quality slider left to reduce visual detail, or right to restore detail.
Roblox’s Graphics Quality support page documents these controls. Compare the result in the same experience; the lower setting trades visual quality for a chance at smoother performance. You can move the slider back if the visual difference is not worth it.
3. Check Sober’s graphics settings, if available
Community setup guides describe Sober controls for choosing a renderer and a graphics optimization mode. Their names and availability may depend on the installed release, and these details are not established by Sober’s official homepage. Open the Settings interface provided by your version and confirm that an option exists before following community advice. A community README recommends using Sober’s Settings UI rather than editing its configuration file by hand.

- Graphics optimization mode: Community notes identify performance, balanced and quality choices. If your version offers them, compare the available choices rather than assuming one is best.
- Renderer: Community notes identify
use_openglas a way to select OpenGL instead of Vulkan. If Vulkan crashes, causes rendering problems or prevents launch, trying OpenGL as a fallback is reasonable. It is not a universal speed or compatibility improvement.
The settings references are community guidance: the trezero Linux setup README and the ValkorX Sober README. Your GPU, driver, game and Sober version all affect whether a renderer change helps.

To tell whether a change helps your setup, compare it against a baseline in the same Roblox experience under similar conditions. Avoid changing several graphics options at once, since you will not know which adjustment affected the result.

- Play for a short baseline session and note perceived smoothness. If you already use a trusted FPS overlay, note its reading as well.
- Change one setting, such as Roblox graphics quality or a Sober renderer option.
- Replay the same experience under similar conditions and compare smoothness, visuals and stability.
- Keep the change only if the trade-off suits you. Revert it if stability or image quality gets worse.
This is a practical comparison method, not a benchmark or promise of a particular FPS increase. If settings do not resolve the problem, a game-specific issue, driver problem or system resource bottleneck may be involved.

Which setting should you try?
