Sober is an unofficial way to play Roblox on Linux, but it is not Roblox’s Windows client running through Wine: Sober uses a specialized runtime to run the Android version of Roblox. That gives Linux players a possible route where the official support list offers none, with Android-client limitations and no guarantee that every game will work.
Can you play Roblox on Linux with Wine?
Roblox Support lists Linux as unsupported in its computer hardware and operating system requirements. That describes Roblox’s official support position; it does not mean there is no unofficial way to play.
Sober is a community-developed alternative, not a Wine or Proton setup for the Windows client. Its runtime bridges the Android version of Roblox to Linux, as described in the Sober FAQ. The available documentation does not establish Wine as a reliable, current route for Roblox Player, so older instructions for launching the Windows client through Wine should not be treated as equivalent to Sober or as a supported solution.
How Sober and Wine differ
| What matters | Sober | Wine/Proton |
|---|---|---|
| Client being run | Android version of Roblox, bridged to Linux by Sober’s specialized runtime. Sober FAQ | Intended to run the Windows client; current reliable Roblox Player compatibility is not established by the sources reviewed. |
| Roblox’s official position | Still unofficial; Roblox lists Linux as unsupported. Roblox Support | Linux remains outside Roblox’s stated computer support. Roblox Support |
| Installation path | Flatpak from Flathub; the project documents automatic Roblox installation at first launch. Sober Installation | No current Wine-specific installation route or requirements are established here. |
| Key trade-off | Android-client visuals and possible game-specific or driver issues. Sober troubleshooting | Do not assume old Wine guides provide a working present-day route. |
Will Sober run on your Linux PC?
The practical target in Sober’s installation requirements is an x86-64/AMD64 Linux system. The project lists these minimums:
#1 Best Overall
- Redemption: Online only. Robux cards can only be redeemed in a browser at Roblox.com/redeem. They cannot be redeemed in the Roblox mobile app or any video game console.
- Roblox is an immersive platform for connection and communication. Every day, millions of people come to Roblox to create, play, work, learn, and connect with each other in experiences built by our global community of creators.
- Get more with every Roblox Gift Card! From now on, when you redeem a Roblox gift card, you get up to 25% more Robux. Perfect for gaming, creating, and exploring- more Robux means more possibilities!
- Deck out your avatar and unlock additional perks in your favorite experiences when you use Roblox Gift Cards to purchase Robux (Roblox's virtual currency).
- Each gift card grants a free virtual item upon redemption.
- Linux kernel 5.11 or newer.
- An x86-64/AMD64 processor with SSE4.1.
- Graphics hardware capable of OpenGL ES 3.0.
Sober recommends SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1 for a smoother experience. Roblox’s x86-64 Android APK requires SSE4.2; Sober can emulate that instruction set on SSE4.1 processors, but the project warns of a performance cost. The FAQ mentions an ARM beta, but says it is not production-ready, so ARM should not be considered a generally supported target.
For graphics, Sober’s FAQ says recent GPUs with Vulkan support through Mesa or NVIDIA drivers are likely to be compatible, and that Sober may fall back to OpenGL when Vulkan is unavailable. That is project guidance, not a guarantee for a particular GPU or driver combination.

How to install Sober
- Install Flatpak and make sure Flathub is available on your Linux distribution.
- Run
flatpak install flathub org.vinegarhq.Soberin a terminal. This is the command in Sober’s installation guide. - Launch Sober. On first run, it prompts you to install Roblox; choose automatic installation unless you specifically understand the manual APK process.
The Flathub listing showed version 1.8.0 when checked on October 5, 2026. Its notes mention fixes for performance problems, freezes, a rendering issue on some GPUs, and Vulkan crashes, plus an update to Roblox 2.741.1061. Release details can change, so check Flathub for the version and notes currently offered.
What compatibility limitations should you expect?
Android-client visuals
Because Sober runs the Android client, it inherits mobile-oriented presentation choices. The troubleshooting guide identifies pixelated outlines as a longstanding issue and says avatar clothing may look lower quality because the client targets mobile texture quality. Raising texture settings can use more memory.

Some games may reject the client
The troubleshooting guide explains that games using Android Remote Attestation (ARA) may refuse Sober because it is not a real Android device. This is a game-specific and changeable compatibility issue, not a blanket Roblox block. The guide’s list of games with confirmed reports was marked as having ARA disabled as of August 20, 2026, while noting it could be turned back on without notice.
System and launch problems
Sober’s documentation also identifies out-of-memory crashes, particularly with limited VRAM; mismatches between NVIDIA drivers and Flatpak’s driver version; launch problems on outdated kernels; and poor or unsupported virtual-machine behavior unless GPU passthrough is available. These are useful troubleshooting signals, not proof that any single hardware upgrade will fix a problem.

Is Sober faster than Windows Roblox?
Sober’s developers say it can perform as well as or better than the Windows client on the same computer, and the project site relays users’ reports of strong performance. Those are project claims and anecdotes, not independent benchmark results: the available sources provide no controlled test setup, game-by-game results, or comparative measurements. Real performance can vary with the game, GPU, drivers, and Sober release. Recent Flathub notes addressing freezes, performance, and graphics issues are another reason to treat performance as version-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Does Sober support Roblox Studio?
No. Sober is for playing Roblox, not a Roblox Studio solution. The Sober FAQ directs Studio users to Vinegar, a separate VinegarHQ tool.

Is Sober worth trying?
Sober is the more relevant option to investigate if you want to play Roblox on Linux and your system meets its documented requirements: it has a current Flatpak distribution and explicitly targets Roblox through the Android client. Choose it with the understanding that it is experimental and unofficial. Sober’s project site warns that it may contain bugs, may be discontinued, and may be blocked by Roblox. Neither Sober nor Wine changes Roblox’s official Linux support status, and continued access is not guaranteed.
