If DOOM: The Dark Ages stutters, freezes, or drops frames on PC, first check that your hardware meets the game’s target for your chosen settings. Then work through Bethesda’s fixes in order: use an NVMe drive, check Windows GPU scheduling and graphics drivers, close overlays and background apps, lower graphics quality, and verify the game files. For freezes tied to a particular feature or action, use the specific fixes below.
Check whether your PC meets the game’s target
Bethesda’s PC requirements pair three performance targets with hardware tiers. These are the publisher’s stated targets, not a guarantee that every system will sustain the listed frame rate in every scene.

These requirements come from Bethesda’s PC system requirements; the page does not state a publication year. If your hardware is below the tier for your resolution and quality preset, lower the resolution or preset before treating every frame drop as a driver fault.
Try Bethesda’s general performance fixes in order
Change one thing at a time and check whether the problem changes. That makes it easier to identify a cause and undo a setting that has no effect.

- Install the game on an NVMe SSD. Bethesda recommends NVMe storage rather than a hard disk drive. The published requirements call for an NVMe SSD with 100 GB available. If the game is on an HDD, moving it to suitable NVMe storage is relevant; an SSD upgrade is not a universal FPS fix.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows. Find the option in Windows graphics settings and turn it on, then restart the game. Windows labels and menu placement can vary by version.
- Disable overlays. Turn off Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays temporarily, then see whether the stutter or freeze stops.
- Close unnecessary background apps. Shut down nonessential programs that may use system resources or interfere with the game.
- Update your graphics driver. Bethesda’s performance guidance names AMD driver 25.5.1 and NVIDIA driver 576.40 as minimum versions. Driver recommendations change, so check the current driver from AMD or NVIDIA rather than assuming those are the latest. Bethesda also notes a specific launch-crash exception: if a system with an AMD Ryzen CPU persistently crashes at launch with NVIDIA 576.40, disable the integrated GPU or install AMD driver 25.4.1.
- Lower the in-game quality level. Reduce the preset or demanding graphics settings and check whether frame pacing improves.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in the launcher where you own the game to check for damaged or missing files.
- Check GPU selection and power settings. Confirm the game is using the primary or high-performance GPU, and use a high-performance power profile. On a laptop, power-saving settings can switch the game to integrated graphics; select the discrete/high-performance GPU for the game.
- Restore video settings to auto-detected values. If a recent settings change preceded the problem, revert to the game’s detected defaults. Steam players can choose Launch in Safe Mode to start with safer settings.
- Check administrator and antivirus settings. Bethesda includes these as further troubleshooting checks if the earlier steps do not resolve performance problems.
- Isolate Windows conflicts. If the issue persists, Bethesda suggests testing a new Windows user profile and using Selective Startup to identify a conflicting program. Its guidance also notes that DirectX runtime libraries may need reinstalling.

Use the fix that matches a specific freeze or crash
Freeze during a cutscene with FSR Frame Generation
Bethesda says it resolved an issue that caused freezes during cutscenes while using FSR Frame Generation on certain NVIDIA GPUs in the June 2025 update. Install the game update if you are encountering this scenario. The fix is specifically described for certain NVIDIA GPUs, not every cutscene freeze.

Game will not restore after Alt+Tab
Bethesda is aware of cases where the game does not restore after switching windows. If you need to Alt+Tab, use Windowed or Borderless Windowed display mode. This is a workaround for restoring the game, rather than a general fix for low FPS. See Bethesda’s Alt+Tab guidance.
Crash on an RTX 50-series GPU with Multi Frame Generation
Bethesda says a particular combination can crash the game: G-Sync (with a supported display) or V-Sync enabled together with Multi Frame Generation through NVIDIA Control Panel. Disable one of these options in NVIDIA Control Panel. If you want both active, Bethesda’s workaround is to enable them in the game’s own settings instead. If the problem continues
Note when the issue happens—at launch, during a cutscene, after Alt+Tab, or during ordinary play—and which change you tried. That symptom pattern helps separate a hardware or settings bottleneck from a feature-specific crash. If the PC meets the target and the steps above do not help, use Bethesda Support’s performance page for the latest guidance and report the affected hardware, driver version, and steps that reproduce the problem.
