Gold and Gears unlocks after you clear Simulated Universe: World 5. The mode’s defining choice is its customizable Audience Dice: their faces help shape which domains and rewards you pursue, so choose a setup for your route and objective rather than searching for one universally best build. Gold and Gears has five difficulties, plus Secrets, Tests, and Conundrums for progression beyond simply clearing a run.
How to unlock Gold and Gears
Clear Simulated Universe: World 5 to gain access. HoYoverse introduced Gold and Gears as a permanent Simulated Universe addition after Version 1.6; it is not a limited-time event. HoYoverse’s announcement outlines the mode and its progression.
How a run works
You move through the mode’s planes, choosing domains and encountering enemies or events while gathering in-run effects and resources. Blessings, Curios, and your selected Path shape your run. Gold and Gears adds random and Adventure Occurrences, updated Blessings and Curios, and customizable Audience Dice.
Dice faces are not just a cosmetic selection: they let you influence the kinds of domains you encounter and the rewards you pursue. Think of a dice configuration as a way to steer a run toward an objective, not as a replacement for adapting to the Blessings and Curios you actually obtain.

Which dice should you use?
Choose faces according to the route and payoff you want. The useful comparison is what each setup is intended to generate, how much control it gives you over the route, and how much combat exposure it involves. The official overview confirms that dice customization can help players pursue Blessings and Curios, but it does not identify one best setup for every Path, team, or difficulty.
For a concrete historical example, a HoYoLAB guide labeled Version 1.6 and published January 1, 2024 describes a boss-rush configuration using Domain: Pursuit and General: Imitation, among other suggested faces. Its stated rationale is to use Pursuit’s passive to move toward the boss. Treat this as an example of matching dice to a boss-focused route, not as verified current optimal advice. The same guide’s team suggestions are also period-specific. Character availability and game balance can change, and that guide does not establish that its teams remain the strongest choices today.
What to do after clearing a difficulty
Gold and Gears has five difficulties; clearing Difficulty V makes higher-level challenges available. A difficulty clear is only one kind of progress. The mode also tracks Secrets, Tests, and Conundrums, which add objectives beyond completing runs. Pursue these separately if your goal is broader completion or the Erudition unlock.
Unlocking the Path of Erudition
Collect all Secrets in Gold and Gears and complete the Adventure Mission “Gold and Gears: Finale.” HoYoverse states that both are required to unlock the Path of Erudition in Simulated Universe. Clearing a difficulty alone does not satisfy this condition.
Rewards
HoYoverse confirms rewards for first clears, Tests and Conundrums, and Secret collection. Exact reward quantities are not stated in the announcement’s indexed text, so check the in-game reward panels for the amounts currently shown in your version.

What to expect in the Third Plane boss fight
In the deepest-level Third Plane boss fight, Gold and Gears introduces Resonance Extrapolation: Path energy produces additional Path Resonances. Plan for the encounter to include these extra Resonances rather than assuming the boss fight will follow the same Path Resonance pattern as earlier encounters.
