Sony says Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) grew out of its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, Project Amethyst. Sony has separately announced a close PS5 partnership with Rockstar, but has not connected that partnership to QSSR.
What Sony says QSSR is
On October 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” for PS5. The announcement, by Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, says QSSR was “Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD.” It describes two design choices: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony’s QSSR announcement presents QSSR as bringing AI-guided upscaling to PS5 and distinguishes it from PSSR, which Sony calls the gold standard on PS5 Pro.
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use QSSR. The company said both were being patched that day to add QSSR as an optional graphics choice on PS5. Sony also said QSSR would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that makes the technology available to developers, not guaranteed in every game.
Is GTA VI confirmed to use QSSR?
No. Sony’s QSSR announcement names the two initial games but does not mention GTA VI. Sony’s separate June 24, 2026 announcement describes a close partnership with Rockstar Games and says Grand Theft Auto VI will play on PS5 using the console’s immersive features. It does not mention QSSR. Sony’s GTA VI announcement therefore confirms a PS5 partnership, not support for this upscaling feature.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page does not establish QSSR support either. Based on the available official statements, GTA VI QSSR support is unconfirmed. That does not establish that the game will or will not use it; a future announcement or update could clarify the matter.
Where the “forced Sony” claim comes from—and what the evidence shows
The claim that GTA VI developers “literally forced” Sony to create QSSR goes beyond what the announcements establish. Sony attributes QSSR’s origin to Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The company’s QSSR post does not credit Rockstar or GTA VI developers with requesting or causing the technology. Sony’s separate description of its close relationship with Rockstar is not evidence of a connection between GTA VI and QSSR.

The accurate distinction is straightforward: Sony has announced QSSR for PS5 and a close PS5 partnership with Rockstar for GTA VI, but it has not said the two are linked. Treating the “forced” claim as fact—or claiming GTA VI will use QSSR—would turn an unconfirmed connection into an assertion.

- Platform: Sony announced QSSR for PS5 and describes PSSR as the gold standard on PS5 Pro.
- Initial games: Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles, with the feature added as an optional graphics choice.
- Availability to developers: Sony says it will offer QSSR broadly to PlayStation developers; it has not confirmed adoption by every developer or any specific game beyond the named first titles.
- GTA VI support: No reviewed official announcement confirms it.
- Performance details: Sony’s announcement does not provide resolution targets, frame-rate measurements, image-quality benchmarks, or quantified performance costs. It is not enough to infer a particular GTA VI graphics mode or performance result.
For now, the useful answer to “Will GTA 6 use QSSR?” is that official confirmation has not been made. The answer could change if Sony or Rockstar announces support, but the existing announcements do not establish it.
