Reports said an unofficial browser build appeared at playgta5.com, then went offline within hours. It was described as running locally through WebAssembly—not as an official Rockstar release or a cloud-streamed version. Coverage speculated that AI may have assisted with the conversion, but did not establish who made the build or what tools, if any, were used.
What happened to the GTA 5 browser build?
Tom’s Hardware Italia reported on October 6, 2026, that an unofficial Grand Theft Auto V browser version had appeared at playgta5.com and disappeared within hours. RockstarINTEL also reported that the site became unavailable. The reports describe a brief online appearance; they do not establish that the site is still available.

The reason it went offline is unclear. Tom’s Hardware said accounts differed between Cloudflare intervention and a Take-Two takedown. RockstarINTEL observed a Cloudflare block message, but that observation does not show who initiated the restriction. It is more accurate to say the site went offline or was blocked than to attribute the action to Rockstar or Take-Two.
How was it reportedly playable in a browser?
Coverage said the build ran locally in the browser using WebAssembly (Wasm), rather than streaming gameplay video from a remote gaming server. WebAssembly is a portable compilation target designed for web deployment; its official project describes an efficient binary format that runs in a sandbox when embedded in a browser. That explains the general technology, not the provenance or performance of this particular build. WebAssembly.org

Reports described an initial download of roughly 700 MB of compressed assets, with additional resources downloaded during play. Tom’s Hardware relayed user reports of Story Mode, operation at 60 frames per second, gamepad and touch controls, and smartphone use. RockstarINTEL reported keyboard and mouse, controller and touchscreen input, and save support. These are reported capabilities of the short-lived build, not independently verified specifications.
What could players access—and what was missing?
According to RockstarINTEL, the browser build did not provide access to GTA Online. Reports instead described access to Story Mode. Because the site was only reported available briefly and the build was not independently tested, the coverage does not establish how consistently its reported features worked for different devices or players.

Local browser execution is also different from cloud gaming: in cloud gaming, a remote server runs the game and streams the resulting video to the player. The reporting characterized this build as executing locally, but did not provide a verified performance comparison, clarify whether players needed an account or licensed game copy, or establish what hardware was required.
Was the browser version made with AI?
That has not been confirmed. Coverage speculated that AI may have assisted with converting the game, and discussed a possible leaked-source-code origin, but the reviewed reports did not verify either claim. They also did not identify the project’s author or name any AI tools used. The headline’s AI framing should therefore be read as speculation about the wider story, not as an established account of how the build was made.

The reported social post from Pixel Gamer 4k, dated October 6, 2026, used the phrases “GTA 5 is now playable on web browser” and “Here I am playing GTA 5 on chrome.” Those were the poster’s claims reproduced in news coverage, not a statement from Rockstar.

No. The reports described the build as unofficial, and nothing in the reviewed coverage establishes that Rockstar released or endorsed a browser edition. Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto V page confirms the game’s identity but does not, in the retrieved material, provide evidence of a browser version.

The incident should not be treated as confirmation that the game can now be played through an authorized browser service. Anyone looking to play the official game should check Rockstar’s current product information and listings for the platform and edition they want; the reports about this brief build do not verify current retail availability.
