Secure the email account linked to PlayStation Network, enable a supported stronger sign-in method, and save your recovery codes somewhere safe. If you see an account change you did not make or cannot sign in, use PlayStation’s official recovery flow promptly. Reports of individual account problems do not establish a confirmed platform-wide breach: the official support guidance explains security and recovery steps but does not quantify current takeovers or identify a continuing campaign.
Secure the email address linked to your PlayStation account
Your sign-in email is important for account communications and recovery. If you receive a PlayStation notification about a change you did not initiate, secure the email account first by changing its password, then follow PlayStation’s account-recovery guidance. PlayStation warns: “If the email doesn’t state that the change was initiated by PlayStation, someone else might be trying to access your account.” See PlayStation’s Account & Security guidance.
Choose a stronger sign-in method
PlayStation documents passkey sign-in and 2-step verification (2SV). For 2SV, you can use an authenticator app or SMS. The support guidance does not provide comparative test results establishing that one option is best for everyone, so consider which method you can reliably access and recover.
Set up a passkey
- Open Account Management and go to Security.
- Select Sign in with Passkey, then Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts.
- If passkey sign-in fails, choose Can’t Sign In with Passkey and use email or QR-code sign-in where offered.
Passkeys may not work identically across every setup. PlayStation notes possible compatibility issues in some cases, including outdated browsers, Mac Remote Play, and certain Android-to-Windows combinations. Check the passkey sign-in help if your device or browser does not work as expected.

Set up 2-step verification
- In Account Management, open Security and select 2-step Verification Status.
- Choose an authenticator app or SMS and complete the verification prompts.
- Save the ten backup codes shown during setup somewhere you can reach if your phone is unavailable.
A sign-in verification code is valid for ten minutes after the sign-in attempt, according to PlayStation’s current support guidance. See PlayStation’s Account & Security page for setup details.
Keep your recovery route available
PlayStation provides ten backup codes for 2SV, and each code can be used once. Keep them in a secure place separate from the phone you use for verification; do not share them with anyone. When signing in, select Trouble Receiving Code?, then Sign In Using a Backup Code.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
If you have lost access to your phone and have no unused backup code, or cannot resolve unexpected verification prompts by changing your sign-in method, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. The 2SV troubleshooting guide lists these recovery cases.

Reset your password or recover changed account details
Reset a password when you can access your sign-in email
- Open Account Management and select Trouble Signing in?.
- Enter your sign-in ID, which is your email address.
- Use the secure link PlayStation sends to that address to set a new password.
PlayStation recommends a password combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. If account details were changed without your permission, or you no longer have access to the linked email, follow the recovery options in Account & Security and contact support as directed. What the reports do—and do not—establish
PlayStation’s account-security and 2SV pages provide instructions for protecting and restoring accounts; they do not state how many accounts have been taken over, establish the cause of individual incidents, or confirm an ongoing platform-wide hacking campaign. Sony’s PlayStation Online Safety Report 2024, published in February 2025, covers online safety and moderation measures; it is not a prevalence report for PSN account compromises. Treat individual reports as reports, not proof of a service-wide breach.
