The reported results show why that matters—and why the upgrade is not a simple Voodoo 2 substitute: gains depended heavily on the host CPU, and no direct Voodoo 2 comparison was reported.
What the modified Voodoo card changes
HotHardware reported on September 24, 2025, that the SDZ-4440H was designed by modder sdz and demonstrated by PixelPipes. It is a custom enthusiast board, not a retail Voodoo product announcement. Its configuration is one FBI (frame buffer interface) and two TMUs, with 4 MB of memory associated with each chip, for 12 MB total. The board uses first-generation Voodoo chips built on a 500 nm process and runs at 50 MHz. HotHardware contrasts that clock with the Voodoo 2’s 90 MHz.
The second TMU is the architectural change that enables single-pass multitexturing. The extra framebuffer memory also supports higher resolutions than the ordinary Voodoo configuration. Those additions do not change the board into a Voodoo 2: its chips still run at the reported 50 MHz, and the published account contains no direct benchmark against Voodoo 2. HotHardware’s report describes the board and its demonstration.
How much faster is it?
PixelPipes’ reported results varied with the host system. On a period-correct setup using an original Pentium, the modified board delivered virtually no benefit. In a Pentium II system, the report says it improved performance by as much as 60% over a standard 4 MB, single-TMU Voodoo.

That “up to” figure belongs to the Pentium II comparison, not to every game or computer. The reported results do not establish a universal uplift, and they do not show whether the SDZ-4440H matches or beats a Voodoo 2. The CPU context is essential: adding graphics hardware did little for the original Pentium test, while the newer host provided the setting for the reported gain.
Why an original Voodoo needs a particular setup
Voodoo Graphics was a dedicated 3D accelerator, not a complete 2D graphics card. A typical system paired it with a separate 2D video card and connected the two using a pass-through cable. Games had to support 3dfx’s Glide API to use the Voodoo for 3D rendering.

For playing supported games without assembling a vintage PC, DOSBox Staging documents software emulation of Voodoo hardware, including configurable 4 MB and 12 MB profiles. A separate project by Bits und Bolts provides PCB files for upgrading some original Voodoo cards from 4 MB to 8 MB. It targets the Guillemot MAXI Gamer 3D, requires soldered wires, and was reported to produce little performance gain. That project adds memory; it does not add a second TMU or recreate the SDZ-4440H’s one-FBI, two-TMU, 12 MB configuration.

The creator described the idea behind the separate PCB project this way: “When I looked at the layout of how the memory ICs were aligned I got an idea [of] how to upgrade my card without messing up the original memory chips.” Hackster.io attributes that explanation to Bits und Bolts. These are distinct projects, not a controlled head-to-head test. The available reports do not establish equivalent systems, resolutions, or benchmark conditions across the two modifications.
