Coverage describes major cuts to missions, audio and map content, plus radically simplified visuals. It is an extreme experiment, not a practical substitute for the full game.
What the reported 2.5GB GTA V project is
Notebookcheck reports a fan effort that brings GTA V down to about 2.5 GB. MeriStation attributes the project to creator OptiJogos and says the project removes 98% of the game. That percentage is the creator’s reported claim, not an independently verified measurement. Notebookcheck and MeriStation cover the figure; the build itself has not been independently assessed here.

The distinction matters: a smaller installation can result from deleting content, not from making all of the original game fit into less space. MeriStation says the project cuts missions, audio, map and world content, among other material, and simplifies the presentation. Its short demonstration reportedly retains only basic play.
What you give up to reach that size
| What matters | Reported fan project | Full GTA V |
|---|---|---|
| Installation size | About 2.5 GB, according to secondary coverage; not independently measured. (Notebookcheck; MeriStation) | Not stated in the cited coverage. |
| Original content | MeriStation reports that missions, audio, map/world content and other material were removed; it attributes the 98% figure to the creator. (MeriStation) | The comparison reporting does not quantify how much content is preserved. |
| Visuals and performance | The project is described as drastically simplified; MeriStation reports about 7 FPS for the short demonstration. That is an outlet-reported figure, not an independently tested benchmark. (MeriStation) | Not stated in the cited coverage. |
| What the demonstration establishes | A brief example of basic play, according to MeriStation. It does not establish that the story, full world, online functionality or ordinary performance are retained. (MeriStation) | Not stated in the cited coverage. |
So the 2.5 GB figure should not be read as the storage requirement for a complete, normally playable equivalent of GTA V. The coverage describes a content-removal experiment, and a narrow demonstration cannot show that omitted modes or the broader game experience remain intact.

Is it a good way to save storage?
It may interest people curious about how far a game can be stripped down, but it is not a sound choice if your goal is to play the full GTA V experience. The reported cuts are precisely what make the installation small. The available coverage does not establish that this build preserves the complete campaign, world or online play, and the reported demonstration performance is a substantial compromise.
Notebookcheck and GTA BOOM frame the project against high storage costs and mention buying additional storage as a practical alternative. That price explanation is coverage context: the cited reporting does not establish a particular market, price trend, statistical source or current drive cost. GTA BOOM likewise characterizes the project as radical content removal rather than ordinary compression.

- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
For the full game, expand storage instead
If you want to keep and play the full game, adding capacity to your PC is the more direct option raised in the coverage. An external SSD for PC gaming is one category to consider, but this reporting does not recommend a specific drive or establish a current price. Check that your PC can use the drive and that the game launcher supports installing or moving the game to it.
