“Chicken jockey” is both a name Minecraft players recognize and the line Steve shouts in A Minecraft Movie when a baby zombie riding a chicken appears. The joke spread before the film opened through edits of its final trailer, then became a shouted audience cue at some screenings—though viral clips did not represent every theater.
What is a chicken jockey in Minecraft?
In Minecraft, a chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken: an unusual mob combination that players may encounter in the game. In the movie, Jack Black’s Steve calls out “Chicken jockey” when one appears in a boxing arena with Jason Momoa’s character present. The name, Steve’s emphatic delivery and the absurd sight of the tiny rider together make the moment funny to fans who recognize the reference.
Why were people yelling “Chicken jockey” at the movie?
The audience response began as an online meme before it became a theater phenomenon. Know Your Meme dates the final trailer to February 27, 2025, and documents edits featuring the scene and line circulating in late February and early March, ahead of the film’s early-April release. It reported that the Warner Bros. trailer had received over 21 million views in five days. That figure is a reported trailer view count for that period—not a measure of meme participants or moviegoers.
After the film’s release, viewers posted clips of crowds shouting or cheering along when Steve said the phrase. The line worked like a call-and-response: audiences who knew the game reference and had seen the online edits could anticipate the moment and join in. Some clips also showed popcorn being thrown, but the phrase itself and the disruptive behavior are not the same thing.

Why did theaters warn people about the chicken jockey scene?
Some theaters anticipated or experienced disruptive conduct, prompting warnings that patrons could be removed. ABC News also reported that a New Jersey theater required minors to attend with a responsible adult after incidents it described as vandalism and complaints. Those reports concern particular venues and incidents; they do not establish how many screenings were affected or show that every audience was rowdy.
Reactions varied by venue and event. The Guardian reported both warnings at UK cinemas and a Manchester cinema where staff described afternoon screenings as quiet. Cineworld also promoted one-off screenings where fans could dress up and shout along. A loud response at a deliberately participatory showing is different from throwing food, damaging property or disrupting an ordinary screening.

How did the director react?
Jared Hess, director of A Minecraft Movie, expressed amusement at the audience response while acknowledging that some incidents had serious consequences. As quoted by ABC News, relaying remarks Hess gave to Entertainment Weekly, he said: “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” and, “I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great … I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”
What the meme says about watching movies together
A 2025 case study in Frontiers in Communication interprets the chicken jockey moment as meme-shaped audience participation moving from online culture into a cinema. The authors describe their work as an interpretive case study based on secondary sources, not a survey of moviegoers. It offers a way to understand why a familiar internet joke could turn into a shared theater ritual, but it is not evidence that all viewers participated or that the loudest clips were typical.
